The Wasatch Behind: The Beijing thing

On 08-08-08 the summer Olympics will be held in Beijing, the capital city of Communist Red China.
Whoopdedoo. Somehow, I just can’t seem to get the Olympic spirit this time around. I wonder why?
Could it be that I’m still bitter because communist Red China has been our sworn enemy for the past 60 years? We fought them in Korea in the 1950s and never signed a peace treaty after the war. And I’m convinced that my armored cavalry unit got a few of them in Vietnam in 1968. Those guys weren’t dressed like NVA and they were too big to be Vietnamese. They also had red stars tattooed on their forearms. And then, too, the vast majority of enemy weapons and munitions we captured in Vietnam were of Chinese manufacture. The Chicoms have never been our friends.
Could it be that I’m bitter because the Chinese are a real threat to world peace? The Chicoms have the world’s largest standing army at over 2.3 million men. They have nuclear weapons and the very latest in airplanes, ships and missiles. Bill Clinton gave them missile technology in 1996 that made their weapons even more effective. This is troubling because for 60 years the Chinese have been biding their time and waiting for an opportunity to attack Taiwan. They’ve threatened it many times. We have a treaty to defend Taiwan if it ever happens. It could be the catalyst for a nuclear war.
Could it be I don’t like the lousy human rights record of the Chinese government? Since they came to power in 1949 the communists have ruthlessly suppressed the rights and freedoms of their own people. They tolerate no opposition. As recently as last week we were seeing people beaten and dragged off to jail for protesting oppression in Tibet, a once independent nation the Chicoms conquered by armed force in 1951. And then who could forget the tanks and troops sent to put down the democracy rally in Tiananmen Square in 1989?
Maybe I’m a bit antsy because the communist Chinese leadership is crazy. Only madmen rise to the top in such repressive societies. For 30 years we watched the cult worship of chairman Mao. He put his whole population in unisex Mao suits and made them read daily from his little red book. Mao and his followers ruined the Chinese economy, traditional culture and historical national treasures with the cultural revolution of the 1960s and 70s. And the current leadership is paranoid to the point of serious mental illness. They have already said they will bug Olympic hotel rooms to search for spies. Who in their right minds would want to go there?
And China is a godless society. Marxism is the state religion and they tolerate no god but communism. I don’t want to support a regime like that.
And could it be that I’m bitter because our leaders have sold out to the Chinese and made them one of our biggest trading partners in spite of their record of militarism and human rights violations. It’s all about economics and making money. And I don’t like the Chinese attitude about sending us shoddy products and poisoning us with things like anti-freeze in the toothpaste, lead in the paint, and metal shavings in the pasta. We can’t trust them.
And I don’t think the Olympics should be held in one of the world’s most polluted cities. The air in Beijing is worse than Mexico City, if that’s possible. And in that environment, would you dare to drink the water? Would you want to compete in athletic events where the air is thicker than dirty water?
And I’m angry that president Bush is traveling to Beijing to put a happy face on all of this. In my humble opinion we should boycott the Olympics this year for all of the reasons listed above. The Chinese don’t deserve to be honored by the free nations of the world. We should expect them to earn that right.
The Olympics are supposed to be about promoting international brotherhood and world peace. We are not doing that by going to Beijing. We are appeasing the Chinese industrial dragon and kowtowing to our creditors. Evil dragons should be slain and not fed. We don’t need to nuke them. We starved the Russian bear to death. We can kill dragons in the same way. We shouldn’t buy their stuff.
