Duchesne Eagles top Carbon Dinos as ’08 football begins

By Sun Advocate

It wasn’t the outcome they wanted, but the game was in reach for the Dinos until the very end. But, the opener ended in a 12-0 loss to the Duchesne Eagles on Friday night’s season opener.
Carbon held the Eagles scoreless on their first drive. Then the Dinos pushed toward the end zone on a drive of their own. It looked like Carbon might score , but they were intercepted in the end zone and turned the ball back to the Eagles.
Late in the first quarter the Eagles put the ball across the goal for six, but Carbon blocked the point after. In the third the Dinos again drove into the red zone, but could not punch it in. It remained 6-0 through the rest of the half.
Both teams played good defense in the third as they both put up a goose egg in the quarter. The Dinos had one more goal line push that resulted in turning it over on downs after a pass from Blake Najera just sailed over the out stretched finger tips of a diving Tyson Stevens in the end zone.
With just under three minutes left in the game, Duchesne broke open their only big play with an 85 yard run that resulted in their second score of the night. They went for two, but the Dinos didn’t givein and the game ended 12-0.
“I hated losing this game, especially when we could have won. After watching the films, it was just teeny little mistakes that caused the cogs of the engine to fail. But after doing that and talking with the kids, I feel pretty good about it overall.” stated Coach Leo Paur on Saturday. “If we had all summer, and I’m not making excuses because I knew what I was getting in to, I think many of these things would have been resolved with repetitive practice.”
Paur was especially pleased with the performance of his seniors. Stevens, Jake Sandoval, Jake Knighton, Najera, Lance Deeter and Andrew Salazar are key in leading the team. This is Narera’s first time as QB and he did an exceptional job in the eyes of his coach. Paur also was impressed with Stevens punting skills.
“He could play at the college level, just with his punting ability alone. He can do many things well on this team.”
The squad is really pulling together and Paur feels like after a few games, this team is going to really start winning. Right now he has to get them over their attitude of playing to not make mistakes. On a bad note, Wyatt Martinez will be out for the season after suffering a broken leg in Friday night’s action.
A few days left to get ready for Uintah. Uintah only won one game last season and that was against Carbon. Uintah lost their season opener as well. Game time starts at 7 p.m. at the Carbon High field this Friday night.
