Price City Librarian Norma Procarione checks out a new book for girls that is the basis for a program beginning tomorrow at the library. Girls ages 6 to 12 are invited to participate in the weekly sessions. |
Palm reading, 14 different games of tag, the correct way to play four square and the periodic table are a tiny fraction of what girls will discover at the Price City Library every Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
Starting Wednesday afternoon, girls ages 6 to 12 are encouraged to explore the activities and wealth of common sense knowledge packed into the recently released “The Daring Book for Girls” by Andrea J. Buchanan and Miriam Peskowitz.
Since its release in October, the volume, which gets back to the basics, has been flying off bookstore shelves around the nation.
“The girls will follow through on everything that’s in the book,” explained Norma Procarione, Price’s librarian.
The idea for the weekly gathering was the brainchild of Lisa Hubbard, a member of the friends of the library, explained the Price city librarian.
“We were looking for something that might appeal to the older girls,” said Procarione .
According to www.daringbookforgirls.com, the book is “the essential manual for everything that girls need to know – and that doesn’t mean sewing buttonholes.
The site further declares that “whether readers consider themselves girly-girls, braniacs, athletes or a little bit of everything, this book is the girl’s invitation to 21st century adventure.”
Checking out the book’s table of contents is like taking a trip in a way-back machine to the time before interactive video games when neighborhood kids regularly filled the streets engaging in endless play.
It is also a girl’s ticket to some of the activities often thought of as the domain of her male counterparts.
Using the book as its guide the new program will teach its members how to whistle with two fingers, take care of a softball glove and what tools they will need to have in their toolbox for any home repairs that might come up.
As for the trips to a slower time, the girls will learn the correct way to whack a tether ball, jump a rope and hop from one square to the next in a rousing game of hopscotch.
Additionally, the weekly gatherings are geared to helping girls appreciate both the library and the ancient art of reading a good book, pointed out the Price librarian.
“Basically, we want the girls to see the library as a fun place to be and not just somewhere to go when you have to do homework,” said Procarione. “We will also be linking the activities with different books to encourage more reading.”
All girls in Carbon County ages 6 to 12 are encouraged to sign up to participate in the program.
However, even if the girls don’t make it to the library before Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., they are welcome to drop in at the gatherings, according to Procarione.
Copies of “The Daring Book for Girls” are currently available at the library.
