Erika Potts wrestles the ball from a Ute player. Potts finished with six points and played some tough defense in the win over Uintah Friday night. Potts and her team tamed the Utes 34-46. |
The Lady Dinos expected to get through the first round of their play-offs. They had beat the Lady Utes earlier in the season and were planning on another easy win. They accomplished their task with a 34-46 victory, but not before Coach Carlson had to remind them to stay focused and take care of the business at hand.
The Dinos started out hot. They dominated the first quarter scoring 13-4. It was the second quarter where Carlson felt her team got complacent and were settling for just staying ahead. That play let the Utes back in the game and they outscored the Dinos 10-4 in the second to pull the game within three at the half.
Carlson was not happy with the team that headed into the locker room and she let them know it. The girls from Carbon that stepped back out on the floor after the break did so with a different frame of mind. This quarter they added more points than they did in the entire first half to regain a comfortable cushion. Megan Garvin took the point, helping to drive the offensive surge. By the end of the third the lead was 35-20 for Carbon.
The final quarter was icing on the cake. Uintah tried hard to regain some ground, but the Dinos smelled victory and kept control of the game until the end. Uintah’s season came to an end.
Samantha Smith led the Dino scoring effort with 13 points to lead the way to the Friday win over Uintah. |
It was a balanced scoring attack from the team. Samantha Smith was the Dino’s leading scorer with 13. She had three trey’s on the night. Tia Pappas added eight, Garvin and Patricia Smith contributed seven each and Erika Potts finished with six.
The Dinos move on to the next round and a showdown with the Wasps on Thursday night at 9:10 pm at the E-Center in West Valley. If they win they will play at 2:30 Friday, if they lose they will see action at 11:10 on Friday. The tournament is double elimination from this stage on.
To get ready for the next round the Dinos are going to work harder on their press and incorporate a few new offensive plays. They are expecting Wasatch to play a tough man defense against them and will be looking for strategies to deal with it.
The Emery Lady Spartans also won their first round play-off game against Ogden Friday by the score of 53-29 and will take on Judge Memorial at 4:10 Thursday afternoon. If they win they will play Friday at 12:30 p.m. and if they lose they play at 9:30 Friday morning.
