Dian Jewkes
HELPER- Our sweetheart, wife, mother and grandmother, Dian R. Jewkes, age 67, was called home Feb. 16, 2008 at Utah Valley Regional Hospital. She left peacefully while surrounded by her family after battling kidney and heart problems for the past few years.
She was born in Provo on Jan. 1, 1941 to Clayton William and Maureen Clark Smith. Married Thomas Haycock, later divorced. Married Ronald K. Jewkes Sept. 21, 1987 in Las Vegas, Nev.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She enjoyed camping, fishing and just about anything outdoors. Although Dian was plagued with health problems the last few years, she still enjoyed life as much as her health would allow.
She will be dearly missed by her family and a community of friends.
Dian is survived by her husband, Ronald K. Jewkes, Helper; daughter, Virginia R. (Tylen) Overgard, Worland, Wyo.; son, Clark T. (Angie) Haycock, West Valley; daughter, Gaylene (Bobby) Appleby, Price; four stepchildren, Ronald W. (Shawna) Jewkes, Price; Terri Lynn and Jeff Young, Helper; Carole Ann (Troy) Davis, Valentine, NB; J. Brian (Carrie) Jewkes, Helper; sister, Mary Etta Taylor, Salt Lake City; brother, John W. (Janet) Smith, Helper; 21 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and grandson, Chris Appleby.
Funeral service Friday, Feb. 22, 11 a.m., Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday one hour prior to service. Interment, Mountain View Cemetery, Helper.
Kieran Zmerzlikar
CASTLE DALE -Our precious tiny angel, Kieran Hope Zmerzlikar, went home to her Heavenly Father on Feb. 15, 2008 to watch over us with other family members.
She was born Jan. 18, 2008 in Price to Derek George Zmerzlikar and Mary Victoria Brinkerhoff Bertuzzi.
Kieran brought her family together as a whole and she’s the light of our lives. She provided us much love and joy in her short time on earth.
We will always love and miss her sweet spirit ’till we meet her again.
She is survived by her loving parents, Derek and Mary; big brother and sister, Jaymin and Makieya, all of Castle Dale; grandparents, John and Merrilee Zmerzlikar, Helper; Gary and Carla Brinkerhoff, Salem; Sandra Brinkerhoff, Milan, N.M.; great-grandparents, Florence Poulos, Aurora; Ramona Zmerzlikar, Helper; Rae Brinkerhoff, Huntington; three aunts and one uncle, Tara Zmerzlikar, Tonya Brinkworth, Sheriden Hewitt and Laramie DeMott. She was preceded in death by her uncles, Terrence Zmerzlikar, Jerry Wayman, Tracy Poulos, Scott Brinkerhoff; great-grandparents, Jesse Brinkerhoff, Harold (Lillian) Wykert, Robert Zmerzlikar and George Poulos.

Eliza Lucille Staker Jensen
ORANGEVILLE/PLEASANT GROVE – Eliza Lucille Staker Jensen, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and sister, passed away on Feb. 18, 2008 peacefully in Pleasant Grove.
Lucille was born July 27, 1914, in Lawrence to Lawrence Raymond Staker and Eliza Amy Howard. She married Lyman Chester Jensen Dec. 14, 1931. They made their home along with five children in Lawrence, Hiawatha and Castle Gate.
Lyman passed away May 3, 1941. She married Wallace Glen Jensen July 20, 1942. Two more children were welcomed into their family. Lucille and Wallace made their home in Lawrence, Castle Dale, Huntington and Sunnyside; Eagle Mountain, Calif.; and Orangeville. Wallace was killed in a mine accident on Nov. 4, 1978.
Lucille lived in Orangeville until she moved to Pleasant Grove in 2003.
Lucille was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held many callings, including Relief Society president. She also served in the Primary, Mutual, Sunday School and library. She loved being a temple worker at the Manti LDS Temple and later at the Provo LDS Temple.She also served as a 4-H leader.
In the 1950s, Lucille and Wallace served together as missionaries, teaching Native Americans in central Utah, especially the Moab and Green River areas.
Two Native American boys lived with their family for a time.
Some of her grandsons have also served missions to Native Americans.
Lucille was a homemaker and enjoyed hobbies of gardening, cooking, quilting, reading, crocheting and embroidery.
Her greatest achievements were her seven children, five of whom survive her, Lyman Jensen (Marianne), Barbara Naylor (John), Stanley Jensen (June and Earlene, deceased), Glenda Jensen and Janice Gute (John). She is also survived by a brother, Howard R. Staker (Lydia); a sister, Beth Swedberg (Glen); and sisters-in-law, Colleen Staker (Lyman) and LaVon Staker (Bruce). She was preceded in death by both of her beloved husbands, Lyman and Wallace; her two sons, Larry Jensen (Valene) and Allen Jensen (Barbara); her parents; two brothers and five sisters.
There will be a viewing on Friday evening, Feb. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Warenski Funeral Home, 1776 North 900 East, American Fork. Burial will be at the Lawrence Cemetery on Saturday, Feb. 23, at noon. Family and friends are invited to a gathering to share memories at the Huntington 1st LDS Ward Cultural Hall, 115 South 400 East, following the burial.
In lieu of flowers, Lucille’s family asks that contributions be made to Primary Children’s Hospital, attention Children’s Foundation, 100 N. Medical Drive, Salt Lake City, UT 84113.
Ronald Kosmack
HELPER/PHOENIX, Ariz. – Ronald E. Kosmack, 67, of Phoenix, Ariz., passed away Sunday, Jan.13, 2008.
He was born Aug. 21, 1940 to Anton and Anna Kosmack in Helper.
He was a member of the SNPJ Lodge 689 in Helper for nearly 50 years.
Ron worked in construction most of his life, which took him all around the southwest.
He loved to be on the open road, was an avid sports fan (especially college basketball) and loved collecting western antiques and dinnerware.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Evelyn Gomez Kosmack, originally from Helper; daughter, Kimberly Burgdorf, and her husband, Kevin, of Jacksonville, Fla.; son, Chaz Kosmack, and his wife, Dawn, of Houston, Texas; and four beloved grandchildren Cody, Cassidy, Charles and Amanda. He is also survived by brothers, Johnny and Tony Kosmack of Helper; along with many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Anne, Jo and Kate.
Honoring Ron’s wishes, no services are planned.
He was dearly loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed by all.
Eloy Maestas
EAST CARBON – Our loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, Eloy Jose Maestas, age 62, passed away Feb. 13, 2008 in Price.
He was born Nov. 29, 1945 in Dragerton to Jose Eloy and Francesqita Trujillo Maestas. Married Louella Cisneros Sept. 11, 1964 in Elko, Nev.
Eloy loved spending time with Louella driving around town and traveling to see their family. He enjoyed watering the lawn and washing the car and truck. He was the nanny to his grandson.
He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survived by his wife, Louella, East Carbon; children, Clint (Jennifer) Maestas, Price; Bryan (Andrea) Maestas, Rio Rancho, N.M.; grandchildren, Bryann Shannel, Charlie Ray, Carson Joel Maestas. Preceded in death by his parents; infant brother; and sister, Junia Medina.

Veronica Haycock
SPRING GLEN – Our sweetheart, Veronica Podbevsek Haycock, was called home on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 2008, at the age of 84.
She was born in Winter Quarters to Joseph and Veronica Parrish Podbevsek on Nov. 8, 1923. Married Harry B. Haycock June 25, 1949 in Carbonville; he passed away on April 20, 2001.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
In her youth, Veroni worked at the post office in Scofield and, in 1962, graduated from Central Utah Vocational School in Provo.
After graduation, her skills led her to Chicago, Ill., to further her education in nursing. Upon returning, she worked at Utah Valley Hospital in Provo until her retirement.
Veroni enjoyed the outdoors, going on walks, visiting and working alongside her husband at Carbon High School. Her warm embrace, big smile and genuine concern brought great joy to those around her.
She made many lasting friendships and her memories we’ll cherish forever.
We love you, Veroni.
Survived by her sister, Alice (Paul) Schmidt, Price; sister-in-law, Joy Podbevsek, Scofield; loving niece, Kim (Mike) Erkkila, Scofield; and numerous other nieces and nephews who affectionately called her “Aunt Veroni.” She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Joe, Louie, Frank and Stan Podbevsek; sisters, Mary Strang and Frances Elzey.

Darlene Baird
PRICE – Our loving mother, grandmother and dear friend, Nancy Darlene Lawley Baird, passed away suddenly Feb. 13, 2008 at Castleview Hospital at the age of 78.
She was born Jan. 30, 1930 in Price to John Richard and Ella Hamilton Lawley. Married James Allen Baird Feb. 10, 1947 in Standardville and their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on June 5, 1963. Together, they shared 45 wonderful years before his untimely passing on April 2, 1992.
Darlene was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a longtime resident of Carbon County and a dedicated employee of the College of Eastern Utah.
She was a warm and wonderful person who brought great joy to those around her. She enjoyed caring for others and spoiling her family with excellent cooking and baking.
She loved family outings, picnics, camping and, most of all, taking afternoon rides with her husband. Her family was the center of her life and she enjoyed every moment she shared with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, JoAnn Cotterman, West Valley; Janet (Joseph) Maestas, Price; Allen (Elizabeth) Baird, Castle Dale; Dave (Elsie) Baird, Price; son-in-law, Tom Memmott, Salt Lake City; 21 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Jeanie Memmott; three sisters, one brother, two granddaughters, one great-grandson and a son-in-law.

Evelyn O’Berto
PRICE – Evelyn O’Berto, age 71, passed away Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at Castle Country Care Center in Price.
Evelyn was born Oct. 18, 1936 in Price to Pete and Agnes Vogrenic Varellas. Evelyn grew up and attended school in Price, graduating from Carbon High School. She married John B. O’Berto in Helper. Together, they were blessed with two children.
Evelyn had the opportunity of staying at home and raising them and instilled in them the value of hard work and integrity.
Evelyn worked as a secretary for different lawyers in Price and later for Job Service for over 20 years.
Evelyn will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and friend, who was always willing to help others.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents. Evelyn is survived by her son, Gary O’Berto of Nashville, Tenn.; daughter, Jackie O’Berto and Scott Van Rooy of Christiana, Tenn.; and two grandchildren, Ashley and Abby Van Rooy.
A viewing will be Wednesday, Feb. 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Price, where friends may come to share memories with the family.
Corene Huff
EAST CARBON/ARKANSAS – Our loving mother and grandmother, Corene Crossno Huff, age 89, passed away Feb. 14, 2008 under the loving care of her family.
She was born Nov. 20, 1918 in Denning, Ark., to Samuel Jasper and Cora Ledgerwood Crossno. She was the last of 11 children in her family. Corene graduated from Altus High School. She met Junior Gervis Huff and they married on Feb. 1, 1938 in Clarksville, Ark.
Corene and Junior lived in Clarksville, Ark.; Superior, Wyo.; moved back to Clarksville, Ark.; moved to Dragerton; and retired back in Denning, Ark., where they had a wonderful home. She enjoyed her huge garden, canning their crop and mowing their beautiful acreage.
Corene’s main love was for her family and she enjoyed doing anything to make them happy. She was well-known for her wonderful meals and she would feed anyone who crossed her doorstep.
She was a beautiful seamstress, who loved making dresses, coats, formals and dance costumes.
Corene was a devout Christian and an active member of the Living Water Baptist Church in Sunnyside. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School and, while residing in Denning, Ark., she was a member of the Altus Baptist Church.
She will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.
She is survived by one son and one daughter, Bo Huff, Carolyn (Chuck) Abeyta, both of East Carbon; 12 grandchildren, Terri, Doug, Sherri, Shelli, Lisa, Michelle, Amy, Kendall, James, Maddy, Junior, Becky; and 12 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Ada Jean Huff; 10 brothers and sisters; and her husband, Gervis, who passed away on Dec. 15, 2005.
Funeral service Tuesday, Feb. 19, 11 a.m., Living Water Baptist Church in Sunnyside. Family will be at the church Tuesday one hour prior to service. Corene will be laid to rest next to her husband in the Valley View Cemetery in Sunnyside. Arrangements entrusted to Mitchell Funeral Home of Price.
Bessie Milovich
PRICE/MISSOURI VALLEY, Iowa – Bessie Milovich, age 83, passed away peacefully Feb. 9, 2008 in Missouri Valley, Iowa.
She was born to Steve and Mary Zamantakis on Feb. 9, 1925 in Sunnyside. She married John Milovich on April 3, 1960 in Price; he died on Nov. 23, 2001.
Bessie lived most of her life in Carbon County where she worked as a hairdresser for well over 45 years and, the past five years, at the Longview Nursing Home in Missouri Valley, Iowa, where she had many friends.
She loved to cook for her family, garden and visit with friends and family.
She is survived by her son, John Milovich, San Francisco. Calif., Mark (Diana) Milovich, Missouri Valley, Iowa; and Luke Milovich, Hermosa Beach, Calif.; grandchildren, MJ, Elliot, Miranda and Seth Milovich of Missouri Valley, Iowa; brothers, Mark (Jo) Zamantakis, Denver, Colo.; George (Ellie) Zamantakis, Helper; Mike (Lydia) Zamantakis, Helper; sisters, Aggie Annis, San Diego, Calif.; Mary Hatzidakis, Ralito, Calif.; Christal (Sam) Coganis, American Fork.

Agustin ‘Gus’ Medina
PRICE – Our much loved husband, father and grandfather, Agustin “Gus” Medina, went to meet his Lord and Savior on Feb. 15, 2008 in Price after a short illness at the age of 91.
He was born in Levi, N.M., on July 7, 1916 to Jose D. and Beneriza Medina. He was the seventh one born in a family of 14 siblings. He was married to Josie Arellano for 43 years. She passed away in 1987. He later married Toni Colunga in July of 1993.
He retired in 1979 from the Kaiser coal mine in Carbon County after working for over 30 years.
He was a faithful member of Bethel Assembly of God Church in Price.
After moving to Salt Lake City, he became a member of Mt. Calvary Assembly of God where he was a faithful member and was greatly appreciated.
He was a humble man and considered by his family and friends as a jack of all trades and always willing to help someone in need with any small project.
He was a strong and energetic man and much loved for the many stories that he would tell his grandchildren.
He was kind and gentle, a man who loved his Lord and Savior with all his heart.
He is survived by his loving wife, Toni; five daughters, Inez (Louis) Enriquez of Salt Lake City; Pauline (Robert) Colunga of East Carbon; Rozella (Toby) Salazar of West Jordan; Irene (Harold) Eiland of Jacksonville, Fla.; Della (Ernie) Wiley of Greenville, S.C.; two stepdaughters, Connie (Richard) Cordova and Karen Eileen (Jim) Sanchez of Price. He is also survived by one brother, Joe Jr. of Santa Fe, N.M.; and four sisters, Manuelita of Las Vegas, N.M.; Frances of Santa Fe, N.M.; Dolores of Clairmont, Calif.; and Lala of San Gabriel, Calif.; 27 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his only son, Orlando of Albuquerque, N.M.; his parents and eight siblings.
“Grandpa Gus” will not be forgotten and his family and friends will always cherish the wonderful memories of the times shared with him over the many years that we had the privilege of having him with us. His life’s journey is over and now he rests from his labors and is at peace in the presence of the Lord.
The family will greet friends at a viewing on Tuesday, Feb.19, at Mount Calvary Family Worship Center from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Feb. 20, beginning at 11 a.m. at Mount Calvary Family Worship Center, 3050 South 3200 West in West Valley City. A viewing will be one hour prior to services. Interment at Redwood Memorial Estates, 6500 South Redwood Road.
