The CEU men were in a great spot going into the game with Snow. They were three games ahead of Snow in the standings and with both team facing tougher squads next week, the Eagles knew that Snow probably wouldn’t overtake them no matter the outcome of the weekend pair of games.
But CEU didn’t want to give up ground either, in two closely contested contests the teams each took a win and CEU knew it would also keep hold of third place for the season. Friday night Snow edged out the Eagles 72-75. On Saturday the Eagles turned the tables and won 75-70.
Friday night saw Snow come out hot. They led the Eagles 30-22 at the break. CEU made some good adjustments at the break and came out on fire. They climbed right back into the game, but in the end came up just short.
Going 11-14 from the line and four of five from the field, Felix Caspari contributed big to the Eagles scoring with 19 points. Darington Hobson was the leading scorer for CEU with 21 and was big on D as well with nine defensive rebounds. Stephen Franklin also hit double figures with 10 points.
CEU let themselves get back into a hole on Saturday afternoon. They again went into the locker room down, this time by eight. Again adjustment and again they climbed back in. The Eagles were better at shutting Snow down on Saturday. In the second half of play, the hot scoring Snow cooled to under 35 percent while the Eagles were smoking at 64 percent. The eight point deficit was erased and then some, as CEU downed Snow by five to take the split.
As Snow quieted Caspari, Kal Bay stepped up his game and led the effort with 23 points. Hobson had another great game with 16. Franklin had a double double with 10 rebounds and 12 points.
The Eagles have a tough task ahead of them this weekend as they finish out their regular season action against powerful SLCC. They will begin SWAC tournament play the following weekend.
