East Carbon teenager Jesse Candelaria catches some serious air at the local BMX track. The track has seen some recent renovation from local city official Terry Harrison and the East Carbon City maintenance department. |
Carbon County has several recreations to offer every individual in the area, like the park, movie theater, or the bowling alley.
A recreation is a pleasant activity that people do in their spare time for fun like a sport or hobby.
But some students feel that the county can use an update and bring something fresh for everyone to enjoy.
Recently, 200 Carbon High students were surveyed on what recreation they would like to see in the county.
They had six choices:
•Ice skating rink.
•Laser tag.
•Miniature golf course.
•Roller skating rink.
•Paint ball field.
•Arcade area.
Laser tag received 10 votes. Laser tag is a combination of tag and hide and seek. It is usually played in an arena with special lighting, fog, and music.
Whether playing the game individually or on teams, the strategy is to use the laser guns to score as many points as possible by tagging sensors on opponents equipment.
“It’s adventurous, fun and competitive,” explained Carbon High senior Michael Mastin, who has played laser tag.
Although Carbon County has been known for ice skating rinks in the past, 19 of the 200 students felt the activity needs to have an update.
“If there was a new building built just for ice skating, I think more people would come out and bring their families, then maybe we could start a hockey team” said Janine Thompson.
There were 25 students who voted for a roller skating rink.
Natalie Konakis loved roller skating when she tried it for the first time earlier this year.
“If we can get a new, fun place like a skating rink, it will give kids a chance to get out and do other fun activities and help them find alternatives to destructive decisions like drugs, and drinking,” commented Konakis.
There are two kinds of skates that can be used, at a roller rink, one type has four wheels and the other has six.
An arcade/hang out recreation center received 32 votes from the students.
“An arcade should be built because it’s just a place to hang out and that’s what Price needs for the young people,” said Isabell Durach, a foreign exchange student from Germany,
In an arcade there are several games that could be played by students. Examples include ping pong and electronic games.
The miniature golf course came in second with 50 votes.
A miniature golf course offers creative ways for the process of the ball to enter into the holes.
Late last year, Kevin Johnson conducted a survey for Carbon County Youth Commission at the high school to see how often the students would go to a miniature golf course at least once a week.
The winning votes went to the paintball field with 64, making it the number one choice for the students.
The activity uses guns that fire by compressed air and paintball projectiles.
It is usually played with two different teams on a field with objects such as walls to hide behind. The players try to shoot each other with the paintballs that burst on the opponents, eliminating them from the game.
“With a paintball field, I would go at least two times a week because it’s fun and messy,” stated Rikilyn Birch.
There are many fun recreations that are out for the public everywhere, and in the future there could be many more for the community in Carbon County.
