As the nation’s average gasoline price starts to increase, Utah and the majority of areas in the Intermountain West continue to report dropping costs at the self-serve pumps.
According to the latest report from AAA Utah, the current average price in Utah for regular, self-serve gasoline is $2.73 per gallon.
The average pump cost registers 14 cents lower than AAA’s last survey and 22 cents lower than one year ago.
Thirty-three states have prices higher than Utah.
However, local gasoline prices continue to exceed the statewide average. Carbon County motorists are paying an average of $2.83 per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline at the self-serve pumps.
“This year, the price for gasoline has been driven in large part by the ability of refineries to supply their local markets,” said Rolayne Fairclough, AAA Utah spokesperson. “With the end of the summer driving season demand and the seasonal cleaner fuel requirements ending in many locations, refineries should continue to have an easier time supplying fuel.”
The national average price for regular, self-serve is $2.81 a gallon.
The average pump cost posted across the United States represents an increase of 4 cents from last month’s report and registers 19 cents higher than a year ago.
The highest price per gallon of self-serve regular gasoline was reported in Hawaii at $3.21.
The state posting the lowest average price was New Jersey at $2.54. Eight states reported pump prices exceeding the $3 mark, pointed out the AAA Utah spokesperson.
With one exception, gasoline prices continued to drop at locations throughout the Intermountain West.
Idaho’s motorists enjoyed a double-digit drop in the average price for regular, self-serve gasoline. The average price in Idaho is $2.78, a 13 cent decrease from AAA’s August report.
Montana’s pump price dropped 3 cents to an average of $2.96 per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline.
Wyoming’s average price is $2.83, registering 7 cents lower than last month.
Colorado is the only intermountain state to see an increase in gas prices, noted the AAA Utah spokesperson. The average self-serve pump price in Colorado climbed 2 cents to reach $2.93 per gallon.
Arizona’s price dropped 5 cents to $2.63. Motorists in Nevada are paying 5 cents less at $2.79 a gallon.
California’s current average price is $2.87, a 6 cent drop from last month.
All of the Utah cities surveyed by AAA reported a decrease in the average price of regular, self-serve gasoline.
St. George enjoyed the greatest decrease – 22 cents. The average price in St. George is $2.72.
Provo reported the next largest decrease of 20 cents in prices. The average price in Provo is $2.69.
Logan’s price dropped 17 cents to $2.67 per gallon, while motorists in Salt Lake City saw average prices decrease 14 cents to $2.86.
Ogden’s average price dropped 8 cents to the current average, $2.68. Moab’s price, $2.90 is 6 cents lower than last month.
