Deadline for FYI – is Tuesday at noon. Submissions may be sent by regular mail, dropped off at the office at 845 East Main in Price or e-mailed to fyi@sunad.com. Items submitted after the deadline will run in the next week’s FYI. All items are subject to editing.
Cell phones for seniors – are available at Carbon County RSVP. Seniors may dial 911 in emergencies at no cost. For information, call the RSVP office at 637-9118.
Diabetes classes – Free two-hour educational sessions are scheduled April 19, May 3, May 10 and May 17 starting at 10 a.m. at Active Re-Entry. Classes will be taught by Ellen Serfustini, USU Extension. Food samples and recipes will be available to attendees.
Helper spring cleanup – City crews will pick up tree branches, cut into four-foot lengths, on the following dates:
April 16 to April 27, east Helper, east Martin, Locust Street, Maple Street, Poplar Street, Main Street and east U.S. 6.
Residents should place stacks next to curbs, off the roadways and sidewalks. Crews will not backtrack to pick up debris.
Food handlers classes – are scheduled April 25, May 16 and June 20 at 9 a.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the public health department in Price. Two-hour classes will also be taught April 26, May 17 and June 21 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the health district in Castle Dale and May 15 at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. at Green River City Hall. Carbon County Humane Society – offers clinics the second Tuesday of the month at 5 S. Carbon Avenue, Price. Contact the society at 637-0588 for appointments.
Immunization clinic hours – Clinics are scheduled at Southeastern Utah Health District Monday through Thursday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and Friday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Castle Country Habitat for Humanity – is accepting applications. Donations may be sent to PO Box 724, Price, UT 84501. The office is located at 150 S. 700 E. Price, UT. For information, contact the organization at 637-9701.
Free legal clinics – Utah Legal Services has scheduled free clinics the second and fourth Monday of the month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the district court complex, 149 E. 100 South, Price. Residents should bring documents pertaining to questions. For information, contact the agency toll-free at 1-800-662-1563.
Price Main Street program – The board meets the first Wednesday of the month at noon in room 207 of Price City Hall. For more information, contact Melanie Steele at 820-1290.
Women’s cancer screening – Women 50 years of age or older may qualify for a free breast and cervical cancer exams and mammograms. For information, call the health district at 637-3671. Women ages 40 to 49 may qualify for a low-cost exam.
Carbon County RSVP – Residents who would like to lend a helping hand or may need the assistance of volunteers may contact the Price RSVP office at 637-9118 or call the East Carbon office.
Second Chance Wildlife Rehabilitation – needs adult volunteers to feed orphaned animals and clean facilities. Donations are accepted. Residents may call Debbie Pappas at 650-3441 for information.
Helper community development committee – meets Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the civic auditorium.
CASA volunteers needed – Court appointed special advocate volunteers are men and women who want to help abused and neglected children. Residents interested in volunteering to participate in the program may contact the CASA coordinator at (435) 381-5595.
Carbon Family Resource Center – Story time is Wednesday at 11:15 a.m. The free lending library is open to the community. Library includes items for children, teens, parents and grandparents. CFRC is located at Castle Valley Center, 755 N. Cedar Hills Drive, Price. Residents may call the center for hours at 650-3830.
CEU Library – Hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Fridays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. The library is closed on weekends during school breaks. For information, contact the library at 613-5209.
Rape crisis hot line – Rape or domestic violence victims in Carbon County may call the 24-hour crisis line toll-free at 1-866-894-8610.
Golden Rule Mission – Residents may donate tax-deductible garage/yard sale leftovers to Golden Rule Mission in Helper.
Carbon County Animal Shelter – AVID chip pet identification is available at the shelter. Hours are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Price library – Hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7:45 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.; closed Sunday and holidays. Story time is Monday at 11 a.m. for toddlers, Tuesday at 5 p.m., Wednesday at 5 p.m. and Thursday at 1 p.m. The library is accepting used paperback books. Residents interested in English as a second language or basic literacy classes Monday and Thursday at 6 p.m. may contact Paula Lewis at the library. For information, call the library at 636-3188.
Family Support & Children’s Justice Center – offers crisis care for families with children from infants to 11 years old. Crisis nursery is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Residents may use the nursery for respite, doctor and mental health appointments, court appearances, medical emergencies, family crisis, A/Narcotic Anonymous meetings, divorce classes and to escape domestic violence. Parenting classes are Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Call the center at 637-0281.
Helper library – Hours are Monday through Thursday, noon to 6 p.m.; Friday, noon to 4 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The library offers Internet accessible computers and will obtain books for patrons through the inter-facility loan program for patrons at no cost or fees. CEU Prehistoric Museum – From April through September, the museum will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Events


Helper Idol – Residents interested in participating in the musical event may choose a song to practice by logging onto www.thisisyourband. The competition is scheduled during the county fair and Helper Arts and Musical Festival.
Hospice memorial – A memorial for family members of patients served by Rocky Mountain Hospice in 2006 is scheduled April 21 at 1 p.m. at the senior citizens center in Price. Mission San Rafael yard sale, car wash – is planned April 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church in Huntington.
M. Royall art exhibit – The CEU museum has scheduled the gallery opening for the local artist and teacher April 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. Refreshments will be served at the free event.
Wellington junior rodeo – The series is slated May 5 and May 19 at 10 a.m. at Wellington arena. Signups for three age groups start at 9:30 a.m. For information, call Kathie Thayn in the evenings at 636-0158.
Huntington Heritage Days rodeo queen contest – is planned May 5. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m., followed by the contest art 9 a.m. at Huntington arena. Age groups include 9 years or younger, 10 to 14 and 15 years or older.
Ballet Repertory Ensemble – Performances scheduled at 7:30 p.m. at CEU Geary Theater include contemporary concert, April 25 and 27; classical concert, April 26 and 28. All performances start at 7:30 p.m.

Veterans


VFW field officer – will be at Price workforce services April 12 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. to assist veterans in applying for VA benefits. Veterans need not be VFW members to qualify for the free assistance.

Veterans employment representative – is available Monday through Friday at the department of workforce services, 475 West Price River Drive. Club Notes


Slovenian Home – will host a luncheon for members and guests April 15 from 3 to 5 p.m.
Beta Sigma Phi – The founders day celebration for former members is planned April 25 at Carbon Country Club.
NBHA – Events are scheduled at Carbon County Fairgrounds at 7 p.m. on April 24, May 8, May 29, June 26, July 3, Aug. 7, Aug. 28, Sept. 4 and Sept. 18. District finals are Sept. 29 at 10 a.m. at the Carbon fairgrounds. Dress code applies. Events slated at the Castle Dale arena include April 17, 7 p.m.; May 15, 7 p.m.; June 19, 7 p.m.; July 17, 7 p.m.; July 31, 7 p.m., dress code applies; Aug. 14, 7 p.m.; and Sept. 11, 7 p.m. Fees are required to participate in the racing events.

Support Groups


Recovery classes – are scheduled Monday to Friday at the Golden Rule Mission in Helper from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Classes include relapse prevention, Big Book, 12 steps, traditions, spirituality and life skills. AA is 6 p.m. daily.
Price Recovery group – meets Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the CEU computer building.
Reach to Recovery – The American Cancer Society program matches a diagnosed breast cancer patient with a trained survivor who can answer questions and address concerns. For information, contact Shanna Mezek at 637-3204.

FUTURES – The Carbon NAMI affiliate, a support group developed for families who have children with challenges, meets the first and third Wednesday of the month. The first Wednesday is caregiver support night. The third Wednesday is family activity night.
