The Carbon dive team traveled to an early season meet in Park City on Nov. 3 to try and shake out the cobwebs incurred during the long off-season.
“Most of the divers from all the teams are not in top form, so some of their dives were off,” said Carbon coach Stew Foster.
Foster reported that the teams chief goal this year will be to qualify for the state tournament. In order to do that each student must meet one of the following requirements.
•Not have any failed dives.
•Attend at least three qualifying meets, not counting region.
•Be in the top 24 scores at the end of the season.
According to Foster the Dino’s boys had five individuals who did not fail a dive in the 11 dive portion of the meet. Travis Hobbs placed third with no failed dives. Kent Olsen placed fifth, Nick Torres placed sixth, T.J. Bettino placed eighth and James Machicinski placed ninth overall.
“T.J. is a ninth grader and this was his first 11 dive meet,” said Foster. “He really surprised us.”
In the six dive competition Brett Wells placed first. Wells was competing in the 11 dive portion of the meet, according to Foster and so was Dwight Denny.
“Because they both had two failed dives, they were put back in the six dive portion of the meet.
Denny placed seventh in the six dive competition and Kenny Hobbs placed sixth.
Kaleb Kulow placed fourth with only one week of practice, said Foster. Kulow is a ninth grader at Mont Harmon Junior High.
“As a team our Carbon team place first out of all teams at the competition,” said Foster. “I was really pleased with our team.”
The teams next meet will take place Nov. 8 at South Summit.
