State’s tax commission, college unveil specialized motor vehicle license plates

Carbon County residents will start seeing a familiar logo on new specialized vehicle license plates. The state tax commission and College of Eastern Utah recently unveiled the specialized plates, complete with CEU’s icon displayed at the left of the numbers.
The plates became available Aug. 15 and may be purchased at all division of motor vehicles offices. The new plates cost $43 for the first year, then the annual fee decreases to $25. The $25 tax-deductible contribution goes into CEU’s scholarship fund.
“We think this is a great way to show everyone in the state that we are proud of our college. We’ll really be happy when we sell more on the first day than some other colleges have sold over several years,” said CEU president Ryan Thomas.
CEU vice president for advancement Brad King noted the value of the plates.
“We can provide the equivalent of a full semester of tuition for every 30 plates purchased,” said King.
For an extra charge, the plates may be personalized by the DMV.
“I’ve heard there are a lot of people on campus using the tax commission’s website to see if they can get their name or initials and graduation year on the plates. I think there will be a pretty good rush to be first in line Wednesday morning,” stated Kevin Walthers, vice president of finance and administration at the college.
Plates with four-year college and university logos have been available for years. But junior colleges and some private schools have only recently been allowed to have specialized vehicle license plates.
In addition to CEU, state schools with specialized plates include the University of Utah, Utah State University, Southern Utah University, Weber State University, Utah Valley State College, Snow College, Salt Lake Community College and Dixie State College. The private schools include Westminster College of Salt Lake City, LDS Business College and Brigham Young University.
