The Wasatch Behind: Sharpton’s Godless Mormons

Did you hear that Don Imus has a new job? He’s at the North Pole working as Santa’s helper – ho, ho, ho.
There has been a hurricane of discussion and controversy recently about hate speech, the vile and demeaning lyrics of rap music, intolerance, and political correctness. The Reverend Al Sharpton has been out front, leading the charge against Imus, refusing to accept any apologies and demanding that the man be fired. There must be a “consequence” for a white guy brazen enough to make off-colored jokes about black people, he tells us.
That’s okay, I suppose. Imus has a potty-mouth that should have been washed out with soap long ago. I have little sympathy for the guy.
But then, on the heels of the Imus controversy, the reverend Sharpton does the same thing. On national television, while talking about Mitt Romney, he says something like – the people who “really” believe in God won’t vote for Romney, so he’s not a candidate to worry about.
Those who “really” believe in God? What does that mean? And who would that be, Reverend Sharpton? Please elaborate. Are you calling for the “good people” of America to save us from those godless Mormons?
Glen Beck gave the Reverend a chance to redeem himself Thursday night on CNN. But unlike Imus, Sharpton refused to apologize for his comments and only dug the hole deeper. And while talking to Paula Zahn on CNN, Sharpton implied that anyone associated with the LDS church before blacks were allowed to receive the priesthood in 1978 is a racist.
Sharpton told Beck that he would apologize to “individual” Mormons who might have been unjustly offended, but not to the church as a whole. His comments suggest that the church is evil but there might be a few “good” non-racist Mormons deep in the ranks somewhere. He said he is going to meet with top LDS officials concerning the matter, but he didn’t say what he is going to lecture them about. He also said that the church’s racist past is a part of Mitt Romney’s history and it is something Romney will have to “deal with” in the campaign.
I don’t know about the rest of you godless Mormons out there, but I’m sick to death of the hypocrisy of reverend Al and his friends. I’m tired of being labeled a racist because I don’t want to pay reparations for slavery to people who were never slaves. I’m tired of being called a racist or a bigot because I want to close our borders to illegal aliens and potential terrorists, or because I see evil and societal corruption in rap music and hip-hop culture. I’m sick of being labeled a racist because I want store clerks and cab drivers to speak English. I’ve got a gut full of being called a racist because I don’t want to spend our hard-earned tax dollars providing for millions of people who shouldn’t be in our country and our prisons in the first place. It has nothing to do with race, reverend Al. It has everything to do with survival – the survival of our culture, value system, economy, constitution, and nation.
Sharpton can be all self-righteous about “racist” Mormons, but I have never heard him call Louis Farrakhan or other Black Muslims racist. I have never heard him call the Black Panther Party racist. I have never heard him call people like Harry Bellefonte and Jesse Jackson racist or anti-Semite. He surely has double standards.
I remember one other time when people like Sharpton demanded that a presidential candidate take personal responsibility for the doctrines of a church. Catholics remember, too. That candidate was John F. Kennedy. The Catholic League was quick to come to the defense of Romney on this issue, and I am grateful to my Catholic friends.
No matter how this plays out, we will all see another fine example of Sharpton’s hypocrisy on public display very soon. A report recently released by the Baltimore Sun, and completely ignored, so far, by the liberal media, is that Barak Obama’s mother, who is white, is a great granddaughter of southern slaveholders. Talk about irony. Do you suppose reverend Al will demand that Obama take personal responsibility for his family’s racist past? And will he call for those who “really” believe in God to save us from the sons of godless slaveholders?
