An unusual but fascinating musical presentation was held recently, (4-19-07) at the College of Eastern Utah Geary Theater.
The well attended event featured the world premier of Russell Wilson’s four part composition titled “Four Mountains.” This unusual work depicts the cultural aspect of the Navajo Nation and the influences needed to succeed and live both with the Dine lifestyle and the mainstream society. This unique composition is the result of Mr. Wilson’s incorporation of ideas suggested by Ms. Schaefer, director of Whitehorse High School Band, and personal visits to the Montezuma Creek area and input from the band members of the high school band.
The Dugway and Whitehorse bands combined to perform three relatively unfamiliar compositions including the Ashokan Farewell, which is from the American Civil War Era.
It should be noted that the Whitehorse High School and the Dugway High School are from almost opposite ends of the state, and they performed together with only one day rehearsal – a spectacular achievement to say the least. The final work featured the Utah Wind Symphony conducted by Dr. Greg Benson. This group is recognized for their musicianship and being a symphonic medium with players who have a high degree of musicianship and dedication to their art.
There is so much talent in this area and we thank them for their dedication to their art.
