On May 10 the Carbon Dino Track team traveled to Delta to compete in the Region 8 championship meet. The meet is conducted largely for the participants to qualify for the state meet. The top four individuals in each event qualify to compete in the year ending event.
On the girls side, Elizabeth Smith took sixth place in the 3200 meter and seventh place in the 1600. Patricia Smith qualified for state by placing third in the 800 meter with a time of 2:28.
In the sprint event Felcia Olmos represented Carbon well by placing fifth in both the 100 and 200 meter races. Olmos was part of the 4X100 Carbon relay team that qualified for state by taking third, the team was rounded out by Karlee Martino, Britini Greenwood and Samantha Smith.
In the field events, Megan Garvin was the top finisher for Carbon placing fourth in the high jump with a personal best of 5’1. Britini Greenwood finished just behind Garvin in fifth place. Erica Potts and Brenda Davis were Carbon’s top throwers in the discuss and shotput with both girls placing sixth.
For the boys, Paul Goodrich was Carbon’s top athlete scoring nearly half the boys team points. He came home as region champion in three different events, the 3200, 1600 and 800 meter races.
“His most impressive race was the 800,” said Carbon High assistant coach Isaac Goodrich. “With less than 50 meters to go in the race it was neck and neck between Goodrich and two other runners but Paul was able to surge ahead to take the gold by .22 of a second,” continued Goodrich.
Kent Olson also placed well, he qualified for state in the 3200 and 1600 meter by placing fourth and second respectively. Robert Lowe also qualified for state by placing fourth in the 1600 meter race. Jared Richens qualified for state by placing fourth in the 800 meter race.
Travis Hepworth had a great race in the 300 meter hurdles, placing second. Brock Morley qualified in the same event by placing fourth. Jordan Tatton represented Carbon in the sprint events placing third in the 200 meter.
“I would like to congratulate our team for the great job this year, and wish luck to the 14 Carbon athletes who will be traveling to the state meet,” concluded Goodrich.
