Last weekend’s region meet was a positive experience for both the Carbon boys and girls swim teams. Each squad will send members to swim in two different relay events and the boys had two swimmers who qualified in individual events as well.
The girl’s team went to region with 14 members and 10 on those were first year participants. The 200 free relay team and the 400 free relay team placed 17th and 18th respectively. Zoe Hume, April Sorensen, Elizabeth Kobe and Erica Perkins were members of both teams. Amanda Ewan, Megan Garff, Emily Hunt and Vanessa Lauritsen are the alternates for both relay teams. The 220 free relay team is set as a second alternate and the 400 relay team is a first alternate for the state meet.
The boy’s squad had even more success. Qualifying in individual events were Leo Yu in the 50 free and the 100 back; and Thomas Peterson in the 50 free and the 100 fly.
The 200 Medley relay team consisting of Tim Nielson, Yu, Peterson, and Michael Rigby seated in 16th place for the state meet. Alternates for the event are Brody Jackman, Dallen Garvin, Ryan Slane, and Jordan Nelson. The 400 free relay team is seated in 15th place. The members are Jackman, Yu, Peterson, and Rigby. Alternates are Robert Lowe, Nielson, Jed Prettyman, and Talmage Nielson.
Coach Phyllis Cox was pleased with the outcome. “We are a young team full of many first year swimmers so they really gave it their all.” She added, “We had some new standards that they were expected to live up to so we had some who quit, but in the end it made us a better team.”
The state meet is this weekend on Friday and Saturday in Provo on the BYU campus. For more information or to find out individual event start times, visit UHSAA website and follow the link to the state swimming event.
