A scholarship fund is being established in memory of Juanita Varela Childs, a Spanish teacher at Carbon High School who was killed Dec. 11, 2005 in a car accident with her husband and 8-year-old son.
Childs taught for 13 years. Born in Mexico, she moved with her father to Los Angeles, Calif. Her father instilled in her a love of life and value for education.
Upon completing high school, Childs boarded a Greyhound bus for Brigham Young University-Idaho and later transferred to BYU.
Childs graduated from BYU in April 1992 with a major in Spanish teaching and a minor in English as a second language.
While at BYU, Childs started the first Mexican American students club.
In 1993, she married Kimball Childs from Castle Dale. The couple’s son, Mason, was born four years later.
The family resided in Price.
Four scholarships will be awarded annually to students graduating from Carbon High.
Recipients will have overcome diversity and plan to continue their educations.
A priority will be given to students who have been involved in public service.
More than $3,000 has already been donated to the Childs scholarship fund. Carbon High and supporters hope to raise $50,000.
The fund will also be supported each year by a student fundraising drive at Carbon High.
