Playing one of the weakest teams in the conference, CEU Eagles walked away with a pair of wins. Friday night they downed Colorado Northwestern 118-104. On Saturday night the score was nearly identical with a 114-104 victory over CNCC.
The Friday night affair saw Tyler Kepkay surpassing his season average of about 26 points per game as he hit 45 on the night. Kepkay went 6-11 from beyond the three point line. The hot hand was also with Steve Hassel as he connected for 26. Felix Casperi pulled in 13 rebounds.
The edge on the night was gained by the Eagles in the first half of play. They went to the locker room up 59-45. Both teams put 59 on the board in the second half of play. In the end the 14 point lead built up at the half held and CEU walked away with their seventh win on the season.
On Saturday night the play was a bit more physical. CNCC had four players hit with a technical foul. Kepkay cooled down a bit and only put 27 points in the hoop. Jeremy Latham stepped up and added 20. Anthony Oliver 14, Felix Casperi 14 and Tony Dalton 15 were the other Eagles having a good night from the field. Oliver and Casperi combined to pull in 28 rebounds as well.
Even though the Eagles never pulled away in the game, they kept steady pressure on CNCC and slowly put the game away to take a nine point victory.
The team is now 8-1 on the season and sitting at 2-0 in the SWAC. SLCC is tied for first with CEU in the early season conference play.
The team won’t play again until December 30th against an opponent yet to be announced. Conference play will resume for the Eagles on January 5th in Salt Lake against SLCC.
