In an early season battle for first place in region 8 volleyball, North Sanpete came out on top. Carbon dropped the first match between the two teams, but not before forcing the match into five games. Carbon is ranked fifth in the Salt Lake Tribune coaches poll and North Sanpete is ranked third. So when these two teams get together, there is bound to be a great battle.
The Dinos got themselves in a hole by losing the first two games of the match. Down 15-25 and 20-25, the Dinos had their backs against the wall. Fighting back, Carbon captured the next two games, 25-21 and 22-25.
Forcing a fifth and final game, both teams were determined to take the game home. North Sanpete was the victor in a close 13-15 victory.
Megan Garvin was strong on offense with 24 kills for the night. But that wasn’t enough to overcome the strength of North Sanpete. Coach Bean was proud of the way his team battled back against a well-coached and powerful foe.
“They came back and had a chance to win” he acknowledged, “That is all I ask for, just to give themselves a chance to win.”
Bean credited Julia Potts with a gritty effort as she played hard despite the fact she was still nursing an ankle sprain sustained in last week’s game. He also thought that many of his young players came in and did a good job. His team’s defense was as good as it’s been all year. He gave credit to the entire team for their great defensive play.
“We just came out flat again,” he stated “If we had come out with the fire we showed in the third and forth game, we might have taken the match. We just have to work on that.”
The Dinos will face rival Emery in a homecoming game on Thursday.
