I have an older friend who has had quite a time living lately. She has been moved, stolen from and is not in the best of financial shape. So we have been looking for help for her.
One of the places we went to was the food bank. It was the most horrible experience of my life. She has gone to this food bank since I have known her. They said that she didn’t even have an application there. They however, had her file. It said that she had picked up food two times this past month and she didn’t qualify for more. And even if she did qualify she had to fill out an application and wait for it to be processed. They lost her paperwork. Someone tell me, how is that her fault? I have been fortunate in my life. I will probably never need to go to a food bank. So I’m not exactly clear on how this all works, but isn’t all this food donated? So she fills out the application, and I’m still being nice, although I am guilty of not playing nice with others, I’m being a diplomat today. Until, suddenly we are being spoken to like we are something that needs to be wiped off the bottom of a shoe. I know the meaning of being treated like white trash now. I have never felt so nothing in my life before and I wasn’t there to get anything. Is this the way all the people are treated when they go to the food bank? As a taxpayer I find it hard to believe that people who are that insensitive to the old, the disabled, and the needy, have a job that our own government sets the guidelines for. I’m not better than anyone else, why did she want to make me feel bad about myself?
I’m pretty angry! I have called every agency listed under government, and in 24 hours I have only spoken to one real person. Maybe I am overly sensitive. All this lady needed was a little food and some respect for what she is trying to do. If we take people’s pride away what will this world become? I don’t want to know?
