After capturing the state volleyball championship last year, the Carbon High Lady Dinos look to repeat this year. Currently, the team is ranked second in the Region 8 standings, but Coach Bruce Bean feels that a state title is still within their grasp.
Last week, the team inched one step closer to a second title by defeating Juan Diego. The Dinos downed the Eagles, 25-18, 25-14 and 25-12. Juan Diego did however defeat Carbon 18-25 in the third set.
Juan Diego had been a power in the 2A ranks ever since they began play there, but they are finding that things are a little tougher in the 3A classification. This year their overall record is 2-4 and have yet to win in league play.
Jamie King, Meesha Rasmussen and Amy Stewart combined for 32 kills during this game. According to Dino coach, Bruce Bean, this aided in Carbon’s victory.
“Juan Diego is a good team,” says Bean. “In fact, I think that they are better than what we anticipated. So we did underestimate them a little bit, but things worked out in the end.
With the regular season drawing to an end, the Dinos find themselves trailing North Sanpete in the Region 8 standings.
“We only have five games left during the regular season and only three of them are at home,” pointed out Bean.
With only one loss to their name, Carbon High will look to defeat Granite this Tuesday night as the two teams square off on the Dino court.
Following the home game, Carbon will travel to Delta to take on Region 8’s third ranked team, the Delta Rabbits on Thursday.
The state playoffs begin at the end of the month.
