In a first for Carbon County, the newly organized Southeastern Utah Energy Producers Association will hold the “Energy Days Symposium” at the College of Eastern Utah and various other sites around the community on June 15 and 16.
The program will be broken into two parts with the first day being a tour of four different venues in the area related to energy development and the second day will consist of a conference schedule as well as exhibits. In addition, a banquet will be held on Thursday night at the Price Elks Club and will feature Utah lieutenant governor Gary Herbert and J. Brett Harvey, the CEO of Consol Energy.
The symposium will begin on June 15 with a tour of the Hunter Power Plant that will be given by Utah Power and Light’s Harold Cunningham. The bus for this tour leaves the BDAC at CEU at 9:30 a.m.
In another morning activity the Bill Barrett Corporation will give a tour of the Nine Mile Canyon area with the subject being “Archaeology and Science; A Better Understanding.” That tour will depart the BDAC at 10:30 a.m.
A third activity for the day will take place when a tour of Andelex Resources is part of at “Coal Mines in Today’s World” tour. The bus for that tour leaves the BDAC at 1 p.m. The tour educator will be Sam Quigley.
That evening there will be a tour of the CEU Prehistoric Museum given from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. Former director Don Burge, current director Reece Barrick and museum board member Sam Quigley will be on hand to conduct the tours.
Thursdays program will consist of exhibits that will be set up in the BDAC which will open after remarks given by Ken Payne, president of the association at 11 a.m.
That afternoon the symposium itself will consist of a legislative committee meeting at 1 p.m. and a meeting on coal mining/power generation at 2:30 p.m.
Speakers that have been invited to share their expertise during the program include Mike Styler, the Executive Director for the Utah Department of Natural Resources; John R. Bazza, who is currently the director of the Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining; Alice Carlton, supervisor of the Manti-LaSal National Forest; James Kohler, a geologist specializing in coal development; Ernest E. Wessman, a vice president at PacifiCorp; and Jim C. Norton, the director of administrative services at the Hunter Power Plant.
Some of the invited guests include county commissioners from Carbon, Emery, Sevier, Sanpete and San Juan. The Grand County council has also been invited.
