Has the bubble burst?
For the first time in a long time the Carbon boys basketball team rolled to a 5-0 record in the early going this season. It seemed they could just keep going and going, like the Energizer Bunny.
Then the bottom fell out. Their last win against Union on Dec. 7 was a squeeker (40-38) and later that week in a trip to Ogden a few days later they lost their first game of the year to the Tigers.
Since then they have lost two more, one to Springville (57-53) on Dec. 14 and then another last Friday to Tooele (59-35) in Buffalo land.
That makes so far for a 5-3 season, which isn’t bad at all, but no one on the team wants it to continue.
In the loss to the Red Devils they came close to winning it but just couldn’t make it over the hump.
The Dinos fell behind in the first half of play, but some good outside shooting and a quick score off a turnover put them right back in the game. Carbon trailed by only three going into the half. The team came out strong for the third quarter of play and pulled within one.
But in the end, they failed to hit five crucial free throws in the final quarter. Those missed points were the difference between a two point victory and the three point loss that the Dinos suffered.
Carbon scored one point more than their season average of 52 points per game. Bryan Gazell led the way with 16 points, with Jordan Moynier adding 16. Six of Gazell’s points came from a pair of threes he hit from beyond the arc. Cole Warburton also hit a three.
After that heartbreaker they had to travel out of town to Tooele.
Neither the offense or defense could get anything rolling in that game.
Jordan Namanny led the way, scoring 12 points in the worst loss of the season for the Dinos. Carbon trailed the entire game, but Tooele really pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Dinos 24-11.
The game had been moved to an 8 p.m. start time instead of 7 p.m. to allow the Carbon team to attend the funeral for Juanita Childs, Carbon High’s Spanish teacher who died in a car accident on Dec. 11.
Next up for the Dinos is Cedar City on Dec. 21 and Canyon view on Dec. 22.
Both games are on the road in southern Utah.
