Jana Glover battles to get the ball inside against an opponent last winter. Glover is back this year at CEU as a sophomore and will be one of the spark plugs of the team if last years play was any indication.

The College of Eastern Utah women’s basketball team began their season this past week, and if early play is any indication, they should be pretty good this year.
With two freshwomen from the local area and a group of good sophomores returning the team defeated a Utah All Stars team twice, once in Cedar City 55-40 on Nov. 5 and then again in St. George on Nov. 11 90-60.
Then they took on Pima Community College and defeated them on Thursday night and beat them 77-56.
The only loss of the last week was against Central Arizona with a 58-42 defeat at the hands of the Lady Vaqueros, a team that won the National Junior College Athletic Association championship last March.
In the preseason polls this year they are again ranked as the number one team. So far this year they have ravaged teams from the Scenic West Athletic Conference (the conference CEU belongs to) defeating North Idaho 94-52, Salt Lake Community College 70-48 and Dixie State College, 87-55.
Returning players include Jamie Grover, Kaylynn Fager, Jana Glover, Brittany Blaisdell, Megan Billings, Whitney Fardig and Krislyn Wallace.
Freshwomen include Jennica Mecham, Ashley Taylor, Jennifer Little, Jenny Fiso, Elisha Harris, Staci Little, Mallory Holm and Sarah Stoker. Also new to the team this year are three local products in Tara Powell who played at Emery High last year and two Carbon products from last years 3A championship team, Halee Rasmussen and Maquette Potts.
In the first few games the sophomores showed their stuff as Fardig and Wallace led the team in scoring and rebounding.
Standouts for the freshwomen were Rasmussen and Mecham.
The women’s team will have no more games until Thanksgiving weekend when they play in the College of Southern Idaho Tournament in Twin Falls, Idaho.
The teams first league game will come on Dec. 1 when they play Dixie in St. George.
Their first home game will be another league game on Dec. 9 against Snow College.
