Carbon High softball cleaned up Grantsville on Thursday, May 12 with a 5-1 win, but was overtaken by Lehi who had an 8-2 win over Carbon in the game that eliminated the Dinos from the tournament.
The 3A state tournament started out great for the girls of Carbon high softball after a stumble at the beginning of the first round against Snow Canyon, who won 8-7. But later that same day, the girls redeemed themselves with an incredible win against Ben Lomond 11-4.
On Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. Carbon went up against Grantsville in the one-loss bracket at the Canyons Softball Complex in St. George.
Grantsville, who has a 13-9 record for the year, came out and played hard against Carbon. Grantsville had five hits in the game, but with some great defense from the girls of Carbon, found it impossible to complete more than one run.
The game started off slow for Carbon, but in the bottom of the first, Grantsville completed their first and only run of the game.
Carbon fought back by coming into the top of the third and scoring the first two of their five runs. In the top of the fourth, Carbon scored one more run.
By the end of the fifth inning, with a lead of 5-1, it was obvious for everyone in the crowd that the Grantsville Cowboys were soon to be dismissed from the tournament with an agonizing loss against Carbon.
Brooke Herrick, daughter of Carbon High title winning baseball coach, Lane Herrick obviously learned something from her father when she scored one RBI, a double and a triple against Grantsville.
Morgan Warburton was another star of the game when she pitched a complete game for Carbon, allowing only five hits and just one run.
After the incredible win by the Dinos, the Cowboys were eliminated from the state tournament, and Carbon kept themselves afloat in the one-loss bracket.
Carbon went out the next day unsure of who their next opponent would be. Carbon High would play the winner of the Pine View and Lehi game that was played at 11 a.m. on Friday.
Unfortunately for Carbon, Lehi eliminated Pine View from the tournament with a 6-2 win.
Carbon High came out onto the field with the determination to take home a title, but didn’t quite succeed after a tough game against Lehi. Megan Zimmerman of Lehi warmed up for Carbon with a three run double in the sixth against Pine View in their previous game.
Zimmerman hit a homer against Carbon, while Jessica Anderson hit two doubles in a win that kept Lehi alive in the one-loss bracket. Lehi dominated the game against the Dinos, but even at the bottom of the seventh Carbon played hard with the determination of the incredible team that they are.
Lehi went on to win North Sanpete 5-2, and Union 10-2 on Friday, and Snow Canyon 14-0 on Saturday, while Carbon High was eliminated from the tournament.
Lehi came close to taking home the 3A title, but was dismissed with a flawless 3-1 win from Tooele, who took home their third 3A title in softball in three years.
Even after an agonizing loss for the softball team, the girls went out and supported the baseball team in their 3A title winning game.
