David Ochoa
EAST CARBON/WEST VALLEY – Our loving father, grandfather, brother and dear friend, David Ochoa, age 85, passed away May 19, 2005, at his daughter’s home.
He was born March 1, 1920, in Tokay, N.M., to Leandro and Helen Cortez Ochoa. Married Beatrice Laycock, June 12, 1943, in Santa Fe, N.M.; she died July 17, 1997.
Member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church where he was in the Knights of Columbus and a active supporter of all church activities. David was a longtime resident of Carbon County where he was a retired member of the United Mine Workers of America, Kaiser Steel Local 9958. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. David will be dearly missed by his family and a community of friends.
Survived by three daughters, Edna Magwood, Evelyn Hickman, Helen Jaimez; sister, Eva Lovato, all of Salt Lake City; sister-in-law, Lucy Casias, Gallup, N.M.; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents; and son, Bobby Ochoa.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to C.N.S. Home Health for the loving care shown towards our father.
Funeral Mass was Monday, May 23, at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Vigil service, was Sunday evening at the church in Helper. Committal service, Mountain View Cemetery under the direction of Mitchel Funeral Home.
Philip Klapakis
PRICE – Philip Klapakis died Wednesday, May 18, 2005, at his home.
Philip was born Nov. 20, 1920, in Olathe, Kan., to Manos and Cleva Wood Klapakis.
He was raised and educated in Price, where he graduated from Carbon High School. He served faithfully with the United Stated Air Force for 24 years retiring at Vandenberg Air Force Base as a Chief Master Sergeant and the Base Command Sergeant Major from 1959 until his retirement Dec. 31, 1966. During Philip’s military career, he earned numerous medals and commendations including the Bronze Star, Presidental Unit Citation, American Campaign Medal, Euopean-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal among others. He was also an NCO Professional Military Education graaduate. While stationed at Vandenberg, Philip also earned his AA degree from Allan Hancock College.
He was a member of WWII 305th Bomber Group and a former member of Lompoc Elks Lodge 2274. He was a dedicated Republican and a member of the Lompoc Republican Club. An avid reader, Philip also enjoyed golf, photography, framing, repairing and rebuilding computers.
He is survived by wife of 58 years, June; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Conrado of Yorba Linda, Calif.; sons, Philip of Honolulu, Hawaii; and Jeffery of Lompoc, Calif.; granddaughters, Yvonne Gillett, Dana Conrado and Kasi Clapakis; two great-grandchildren, Lance and Macy Gillett; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marian Newkirk and Helen Hazen; and brother, Manos Klapakis Jr.
