Authorities arrest, book male suspect into jail in aggravated assault case

An alleged assault last Tuesday on two people by a Wellington man landed the suspect in jail early Wednesday morning.
Miguel Olivas, 50, was arrested in a bedroom by members of the Carbon County SWAT team after a standoff until about 4 a.m.
Wellington Police Chief Lee Barry said the incident began when Police Officer Dave Wilkinson was dispatched Feb. 15 and found two people standing in front of a residence at about 8:20 p.m. The man and woman told police Olivas had pulled a gun and threatened the pair inside the home.
Shortly after Wilkinson reached the scene, two deputies from the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office arrived to back up the Wellington policeman. The three went to the door of the home and knocked, but there was no answer.
At that point, Wilkinson called Barry about the situation and the police chief responded to the location. It was determined that, since the man was reportedly armed, more help might be needed.
Units from Price, East Carbon and the Utah Highway Patrol arrived to help control traffic and cordon off the area.
After conferring with Sheriff James Cordova and county attorney Gene Strate, it was decided the authorities would need a warrant to enter the house.
Officials tried to get Olivas to come out, but he refused to acknowledge the authorities.
After the warrant had been obtained, the SWAT team entered the home and arrested the suspect. Officers reportedly found the suspect on a bed, rubbing his eye due to non-lethal gas the team had used before entering. The suspect allegedly had a firearm next to him.
Olivas was arrested on resisting arrest, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of drug paraphernalia charges along with two counts of aggravated assault.
