There are many high hopes at the beginning of a season in any sport, but as the reality of the grinding schedule settles in, it becomes apparent that some teams will not make the championship game.
That’s the way it went for the East Carbon girls basketball team. After a victory over Wendover in the west desert town in December things were looking up, but by last Tuesday, the final regular scheduled game of the season it was apparent.
The Lady Vikings were not going to state, not even a crossover game.
That realization came on the heels of three more defeats in February with a 39-32 loss to Meridian in Provo, a non-league loss in a 82-30 game at Green River and then in a final game a 57-18 loss to West Desert in Trout Creek.
East Carbon ended it’s season with a 1-14 overall record and a 1-9 league record.
In each of the games the Lady Vikings offense was just not strong enough, but their defense was even weaker. In the game against Green River they couldn’t shut down the Lady Pirates who blasted them with a 31-3 first quarter and then eased off a bit with succeeding 18-6 and 20-6 subsequent periods of play.
The offense really struggled in the West Desert game as the East Carbon girls were not even able to manhandle their offense into double figures in any one of the four periods.
The Meridian game was the closest as the first quarter was close (13-11 for the Lady Mongooses) but in the subsequent two following periods East Carbon barely managed any scoring. In the final period the ECH girls did out perform the Provo team 11-4.
Individually, in the Meridian game the high scorer for East Carbon was Samantha Madrid with 10 points. In the Green River game once again Madrid was high scorer with 18. In the final game of the season no one had double figures for the Lady Vikings with Janet Lowe hitting the high mark with 8 points.
The game against West Desert the Lady Vikings will play as a member of Region 18. Next year the team will be placed in the newly created Region 19 which will include Green River, Whitehorse, Navajo Mountain. Monticello and Monument Valley.
