Entertainers Wanted – The Helper Arts Festival is looking for local entertainers to perform on the Main Street Stage on Saturday, August 21. Food Handler’s Classes – for all persons working in restaurants, bars, nursing homes, school cafeterias, convenience stores or grocery deli’s. Classes will be taught in Price on July 22 and August 19 at 9 a.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Southeastern Utah District Health Department, 28 South 100 East. Classes will be taught in Castle Dale on July 15 and August 12 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Health Department located at 25 West Main Street. Block C on Wood Hill – The Carbon Class of 1954 is planning it’s 50th Class Reunion on August 21. Is there anyone out there who has the pride and equipment to paint the Block “C” or “Cs” on Wood Hill? Mayor Joe Piccolo has said the City will pay for the paint, but does not have the needed equipment to accomplish the task. It would, certainly, improve the looks of Wood Hill and would mean a lot to many people, local residents and out of town visitors, let alone reflect the pride we have in our community.
Worship in the Canyon – Desert Edge Christian Chapel will be holding their annual “Worship in the Canyon” service on Sunday August 1st at 11:00 in Huntington Canyon – Little Bear Campground – Everyone Welcome – Potluck to follow the service.
VFW Field Service Officer Visit – On July 22 a Field Service Officer from the VFW Department Service Office in Salt Lake City will be visiting Price to assist you in understanding and applying for rightful VA benefits, preparing and documenting application for compensation, pension, hospitalization and other benefits. This is a free service and veterans need not be members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States to qualify for assistance. The officer will be working out of the Price Workforce Services Center from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Please bring the following documents so that we may better serve you: DD form 214, marriage/divorce papers, birth/adoption/death certificates, children’s social security numbers.
2004 We the People Bookshelf – National Endowment for the Humanities has selected Helper City Library to recieve the 2004 “We the People Boolshelf” consisting of fifteen books. These classic books, all of which reflect the theme of “Courage”, will engage young readers as well as their parents and teachers. The library staff encourages children of all ages to visit the library and read these wonderful classics.
Writers Competition – Writers of short stories and poetry, plan now to join in the 1st annual Literary Fest competition, held in conjunction with the Helper Arts Festival. August 21 will be a day celebrating the written word, with Salt Lake Tribune columnist Robert Kirby starting us off and the top 5 entrants reading their work in the historic Rio Theater. Summer Lunch Program – Carbon School District will serve summer lunch beginning Tuesday, June 1 and ending Friday, July 30. Meals are served at East Carbon High School, Wellington Elementary, Castle Valley Center and Sally Mauro Elementary between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. These meals are served free to anyone 18 years old and younger. Adults are $2.50. Carbon School District is an equal opportunity employer.
Educational Opportunity Center – CEU has a new Educational Opportunity Center serving Carbon and Emery Counties. The program is designed to assist adults who would like to start into a college of their choice as well as assist students with a variety of services including financial aid application, college course selection and completing their GED if needed. The service is free and targets low income and first generation students. If you would like to start college in the fall, now is the time to get started. Summer Literacy Workshop Program – Volunteer Connections is hosting its 5th annual Workshop Program in conjunction with Price City Library sponsored by United Way. Childen ages 4-10 are eligible for this program. Summer literacy’s second session will be held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; July 13-15, July 20-23, and July 27. There are field trips scheduled: A fieldtrip to the Animal Shelter on July 15, a fieldtrip to Carbon Power Plant on July 22, and a fieldtrip to Huntington Reservoir will be held on July 28. Helper City Community Development Committee – All interested parties are invited to attend the Community Development Committee Meeting of Helper City every Wednesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the meeting room at the Helper Civic Auditorium or in the Library in the Auditorium. This committee has been formed by Volunteers to acquire a new Helper City Community Pool.
Free Legal Clinic – In cooperation with the Seventh District Court, Utah Legal Services is holding a Free Legal Clinic on the fourth Monday of each month at the Seventh District Courthouse located at 149 East 100 South in Price. Casa Volunteers Needed – Each year hundreds of children in Carbon and Emery counties become wards of the juvenile court system due to child abuse, neglect or abandonment. The child welfare system can only devote so much time and attention to each individual case and, consequently, to each individual child. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteers are ordinary men and women who find it in their hearts and their schedules to help these abused and neglected children. Foster Grandparents – Volunteers of America-Utah needs grandparents to join the Foster Grandparent Program team. Foster Grandparents receive a modest non-taxable stipend of about $200 per month. Individuals who are at least 60 years old; love children; have a limited income, and extra time to share may qualify. FGP volunteers serve 20 hours per week in local schools, and receive a daily meal, a yearly physical, accident and liability insurance while on duty, and transportation to and from the school. Family Support & Children’s Justice Center – offers crisis care for families with children from infants to 11 years old. Crisis nursery is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Families may use the nursery for respite, family crisis, court, doctors appointments, medical emergencies, mental health appointments, escaping family violence, attending parenting classes/divorce classes and AA/Narcotic Anonymous meetings. King Crawlers 4×4 Challenge will be held Saturday, August 14 at 10:00 a.m. south of the motocross track. Advance tickets are $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for 6-12 years olds. At the gate the charge will be $9.00 for adults and $6.00 for 6-12 years olds.
The Challenge is designed to test 4×4’s in as many off road venues as we can. For this our first year there will be three classes of 4×4’s battling it out over our mountain of rocks, the bottomless mud bog and the tug of war.
Our goal is to give the spectators a great show and the competitors a place to show off and test the skills of there 4×4’s. So if you like what deep mud, big rocks, lots of horse power, and a 4×4 can do come compete or watch the show.
