After hosting the final regular season meet of the year on Tuesday, Carbon High cross country prepares for the Region 8 meet.
Carbon placed second in both the girls and boys race. But according to coach Stewart Foster, the rains that flooded much of Carbon County Tuesday afternoon may have been to the advantage of the visiting teams.
Carbon normally trains on all terrains, including the dirt mountainside behind the high school where the circuit was to be run. When the rains came, the run had to be moved away from the mud to the paved streets. As a result, Carbon lost its advantage of being a strong off-road team.
“I would have preferred to [run the original course],” Foster commented. “I think our team would have done a little better.”
In the boys event, Carbon’s Paul Goodrich led the way, taking first with a time of 16:44. David Goodrich followed in second. His time was 17:03.
Jacob Perez was the next Carbon runner to cross the line, placing fifth. Ted Prettyman finished 13th, Zac Burdick placed 17th and Kent Olsen took 18th.
Tyler Munns placed 24th for the Dinos. Jordan Burrows took 33rd, Kerry Powell placed 41st, Damien Miller took 46th and Seth Wells placed 50th.
For the girls, Katie Hobbs placed fifth in a time of 24:45. Teammate Paige Morley placed seventh, Ashley Anderson took 11th, Brittany Horrocks came in 16th, Jana Burrows finished 19th, Cassandra Bettino took 23rd, followed by Sheena Draper in 24th.
The Region 8 meet will take place on Oct. 13 at Lehi. The top 10 individuals will advance from both the girls and boys team, in addition to the top three finishing teams.
With the surprising strength of the Emery team this season, as well as several other tough teams, Foster said he expects the region meet to be too close to call.
“This year it’s going to be really tight,” he concluded.
