A trip to East Carbon from Eureka struck pay dirt for the Tintic Lady Miners on Tuesday evening when they defeated the Lady Vikings in four games.
The Lady Vikes played well this night, but not good enough to take the games away from the Juab County kids. All were close with the East Carbon girls taking the first game 25-22, but then it was all downhill from there as they lost 22-25, 18-25, and 21-25.
“For some reason we can be playing well, even be ahead and someone will make a mistake and then everything seems to come apart,” said Coach Alisha Preston on Wednesday morning.
The series of varsity games followed a similar pattern in the junior varsity play that same evening. In those games the East Carbon lost the first two 14-25 and 19-25, and then they won the next two 15-12 and 15-12 tying up the series. In the final game the score was 11-15 as the Lady Miners took the contest. In that game a couple of key mistakes by the Lady Vikings when the teams were knotted at 10-10 had the same effect. The wheels just seemed to come off.
The team only has two more regular season contests left with an away game at league-leading Dugway on Oct. 14 and a home game on Oct. 19 against Wasatch Academy, which has a 3-7 record. East Carbon presently comes in at 4-5.
In other Region 18 games on Tuesday West Desert beat Wendover in three games and Wasatch Academy defeated Meridian in five games.
The Lady Vikings will need at least one victory to assure being one of four teams to go to the state tournament at Utah Valley State College on Oct. 29-30.
