Graduation from high school is a big deal, anytime. But for 91 people last Wednesday it was a huge hurdle. The largest adult high school graduating class ever to receive their diplomas from Carbon School District was held at the administration offices and adult education center Wednesday, June 16. The auditorium was filled with friends and families as the 91 students, many older students who returned to the classroom, paraded across the stage to receive their diplomas.
“This was a momentous year for us,” explained Deanna Sweet, who teaches at the adult center.
Rodney Scott, drama instructor at Carbon High School was acknowledged for his multiple years of service and his introduction of the fine arts, music, and photography into the adult curriculum.
Kori Cullum was the guest speaker. Since graduation she became a teacher and told the graduates, along with the people in the audience that the biggest goal is working for yourself. “We all can find excuses, kids, jobs, illnesses, parents, families, but it is possible to go on and do anything and be anybody you want to,” she stressed. “Don’t let them tell you you can’t do it, you can be anything. I applaud you and challenge you to enjoy life and go for it,” she said.
The ceremonies were held prior to the regular June meeting of the Carbon School district board meeting.
