Not too shabby.
That’s certainly not the best one can say about a girls team that has gone 7-1 in the so far short season they have faced, but it is pretty good.
Pretty good is what describes the team too, one that has only lost one game, an aberration at Uintah High a couple of weeks ago.
But that loss has nearly been forgotten as the Lady Dinos continue to beat up the opposition they have been facing in contest after contest.
In the last week they have defeated Cedar City 48-40 (Tuesday), Park City 78-52 (Thursday) and Snow Canyon 55-35 (Friday).
The game last Tuesday against Cedar City began auspiciously as a water line broke at Carbon High forcing school officials to find other sites for the games going on. Having to situate two sophomore, two junior varsity and two varsity games to other locales was not an easy task.
The school finally ended up placing a couple of the games in their gym with signs stating there was not water service in the building.
Two other games were held at Mont Harmon Junior High.
The varsity games for both the boys and girls were played on the College of Eastern Utah Campus at the BDAC. The girls played early while the boys played the later game.
In that contest Carbon jumped out a big lead on the 4-1 Lady Redmen, and by the end of the first period the score was 15-4.
However in the second period, Cedar played much better and did a job on defense scoring 14 to Carbon’s 11 points.
Still ahead 26-18 going into he second half, the Carbon girls were confident, but that was quickly washed away as the Cedar girls literally shut down the Lady Dinos offense only allowing six points in the quarter. On the Carbon side the defense lapsed in a similar fashion to what happened at Uintah and it looked like bad holiday tidings for the Lady Dinos as they emerged from the period behind by one point going into the fourth quarter.
But at the quarter break it was like Carbon coach Bruce Bean flipped a switch on the team, turning them into the Energizer Bunnies. They proceeded to take the once beaten Cedarites apart scoring 16 points in the period while holding them to only 7 points.
It was a balanced scoring effort for the Lady Dinos as Morgan Warburton led the scoring with 16 points, but all the starters and part of the bench contributed points in single digits. Warburton also took down 10 rebounds during the contest.
The Park City game on Thursday night was however, a different animal entirely. In the first quarter the Lady Miners shocked the home team by taking a 13-6 lead not long before the period was over. However Carbon rallied a little and was able to make it a 10-13 game by the end of the period. The 2-5 Lady Miners seemed to be much stronger than most had expected.
But the second quarter showed why Carbon is rated so highly in the state and Park City is a middle of the pack team. Carbon stole the ball time and time again, then to added insult to injury by making stop after stop on the seemingly hapless Lady Miners. At halftime the score was 38-23.
Carbon then came out in the second half and gained a little in the third quarter. But the fourth quarter was again a big gain for the Lady Dinos as they ripped Park City 25-17. For much of the second half of the game assistant coach Cami Carlson, acting as head coach in Bean’s absence, substituted freely.
Carbon had four players in double figures with Warburton leading at 23. Tabby Cummins, the smallest player on the team scored 12. Jamie King and Halee Rasmussen both had 10.
Then on Saturday night the team traveled the distance to St. George where they met a 2-5 Snow Canyon team.
In the first quarter Carbon and the Lady Warriors seemed fairly evenly matched with Carbon just barely edging them out 9-8.
In the second period Carbon exerted not only it dominance on defense, but also on offense as they outscored the southern Utah team 17-9 making the halftime score 26-16.
For the Lady Warriors it got no better than that as they only scored nine points in each of the subsequent quarters as well. Carbon, on the other hand, took the game away early in the third period with a 14 point output and then a 15 point in the fourth quarter.
Once again Warburton set the scoring pace with 21 points for Carbon. Maquette Potter was the only other Lady Dino to score in double figures with 10 points.
The biggest factor in these games that Carbon has been winning is however their defense and not their scoring. All the players that come on the court are well prepared and often the Lady Dinos play a full court defense that disorients and frustrates the opposition. That kind of play takes all five players on the floor to accomplish, regardless of which “string” they are on. And all of Carbon’s players seem to do it well.
The Lady Dino’s last game home game this year will be on Tuesday (tonight) as they face Pineview High at 7 p.m.
