Carbon girls lose first game in cold country

By Sun Advocate

It looked to be a year when the Carbon girls basketball could go undefeated. But on Tuesday night that all changed as the Lady Dinos traveled north over the Book Cliffs and into the Uintah Basin only to find an ambush waiting there. And it was the Lady Utes that did it as they scalped the Carbon kids 52-47 giving them the first loss of the season.
The 4-1 Lady Utes came out of the gates strong as they stayed with a very good Carbon team all through the first quarter and then took a lead in it as well ending the period with a 15-10 lead.
An aberration right? Well it seemed that way as the Lady Dinos streaked to a much better second period out scoring their opponents 15-6 and taking back the lead 25-21 at the half.
There, that was it, Carbon fans said to themselves. Carbon just had a bad quarter and will now beat up on this upstart team from Region 10.
But it wasn’t to be that way. Uintah kept the Carbon scoring machine at bay all through the third quarter, holding the Lady Dinos to only 11 points while they gained one putting up 12. They were still behind, but they were on their home floor and they found that they could play with the third ranked team in the state quite well.
That confidence led to a very good final quarter for the Lady Utes and a disastrous one for the Carbon kids, who were outscored 19-11 and lost their lead about halfway through the period.
It was a bitter pill for Carbon fans that thought the team could run through the preseason undefeated.
Carbon was led in scoring by Morgan Warburton with 15 points, Maquette Potts with 11 and Halee Rasmussen with 10.
The team now comes home to a three game stand beginning with Wasatch High on Friday.
