CEU Tournament This Weekend

By Sun Advocate

The College of Eastern Utah men’s basketball team will hold their first home games of the season this weekend as they hold their annual CEU Tournament at the BDAC.
Coming to town will be some old foes from past seasons and all have been involved in this same tournament at one time or another.
Probably the most well known team will hail from Salt Lake Community College. The Bruins are part of the Scenic West Athletic Conference and CEU faces them at least twice a year with a home and home schedule. They could also face that same team in the conference tournament in late February as well.
Another team that has been at the CEU Tournament in the past is the Clearfield Job Corp Center. They field a team each year and play largely a pre-season schedule against local college teams.
The third team will be the Salt Lake Metro All-Stars, a team made up of former college stars from the state.
Each year the CEU Tournament sets the stage for the season and often the CEU players have at least a game or two under their belt before it is held. That is no different this year.
In the last two weeks the men’s team has played in three games, coming away with a 3-1 record.
They first played in the New Mexico College Tourney in Hobbs, N.M. on Nov. 5. They faced New Mexico Military that day and were beaten 81-75.
The next day they then played Cochise College of Arizona whom they defeated 81-78.
On Nov. 12 they played Western Wyoming in Rock Springs, Wyo. and won the game pulling away 70-64.
The next day they played Salt Lake Metro All-Stars in the same arena and edged that team 82-81.
With that glossy, but early season schedule they are ready to move on to their own tournament and then head to SLCC for a tournament there over Thanksgiving weekend.
The regular SWAC season will begin on Dec. 3 when the Dixie Rebels come to the BDAC to face the 2004-2005 rendition of the Golden Eagles.
The team is coached by Bryan Zollinger, in his fifth years as CEU head coach. His assistants for this year are Brook Erickson and Bob Potts.
This weekend’s games will take place at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday evenings.
