Helper City Community Development Committee – All interested parties are invited to attend the Community Development Committee Meeting of Helper City every 2nd and 4th Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in the meeting room at the Helper Civic Auditorium. This committee has been formed by Volunteers to support community development in Helper City and to work on ideas for the new Helper City Community Pool Project.
Welcome Home the 1457th! – A parade welcoming the return of members of the 1457th National Guard will be held on Saturday, May 8. The parade will start at 11:00 a.m. in Price Canyon and wind along Main Street in Helper. The procession will then continue to Pice, traveling along 100 North to 100 West, then on to Main Street before turning on 300 East and heading to the National Guard Armory on Veterans Lane. All veterans of the Iraq War are encouraged to be in the parade, which officials hope will be greeted with thousands of yellow ribbons and flags flying high along the route.
Castle Valley Youth Leadership Conference – “We are Survivors”, will be held May 21 & 22. Youth ages 14 and up are invited to attend the 2004 Castle Valley Youth Leadership Conference which will include workshops, games, food, entertainment and prizes. Pre-register and receive a free t-shirt. Applications may be picked up from Youth City Council Advisors, City Hall, Canyon View Jr. High, San Rafael Jr. High, or Emery High School. Developmental Screenings – Do you have questions or concerns about your child’s development? Make an appointment for developmental screening if your child is 5 or younger. Screenings will be completed on May 19 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Southeastern Utah Health Office, 28 S. 100 E., Price, Utah. This is a free service. Call Head Start at 613-9492 ext. 101 to schedule an appointment or for further information. Please bring child’s birth certificate and immunization records to appointment. Screenings include vision, hearing, speech/language, developmental, physicals (sliding scale fee or medical card required).
Relay for Life Memory Wall – Please contact Mary Patton at 637-0964 during business hours to have a photo added to the memory wall. Relay for Life is June 18 and 19.
Memorial Cross/Flags – Any person losing a loved one in the past year that was in a branch of the military and is buried in the Helper Cemetery and would like a cross and flag placed in the military section of the Cemetery, please send a letter stating the Name (printed) and the Branch of service for the individual. Casa Volunteers Needed – Each year hundreds of children in Carbon and Emery counties become wards of the juvenile court system due to child abuse, neglect or abandonment. The child welfare system can only devote so much time and attention to each individual case and, consequently, to each individual child. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteers are ordinary men and women who find it in their hearts and their schedules to help these abused and neglected children. Foster Grandparents – Volunteers of America-Utah needs grandparents to join the Foster Grandparent Program team. Foster Grandparents receive a modest non-taxable stipend of about $200 per month. Individuals who are at least 60 years old; love children; have a limited income, and extra time to share may qualify. FGP volunteers serve 20 hours per week in local schools, and receive a daily meal, a yearly physical, accident and liability insurance while on duty, and transportation to and from the school. Food Handler’s Classes – There will be Food Handler’s Classes taught in Price May 19 and June 23 at 9 a.m, 4 p.m., and 7 p.m. at Southeastern Utah District health Department. Classes will be taught in Castle Dale May 20 and June 17 at 4 p.m and 7 p.m. at the Health Department located at 25 W. Main St. The Classes will be two hours in length and the cost is $10.00 to take the test. Frontier Project – Local Family Support Group. R.O.A.R. will be meeting every third Thursday in Carbon County. Meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 10 North 200 East. Parenting for teens – The Family Support and Children’s Justice Center in Price offers a free class dealing with the issues, problems and difficulties facing teen parents. Family Support & Children’s Justice Center – offers crisis care for families with children from infants to 11 years old. Crisis nursery is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Families may use the nursery for respite, family crisis, court, doctors appointments, medical emergencies, mental health appointments, escaping family violence, attending parenting classes/divorce classes and AA/Narcotic Anonymous meetings. Events
Emery County Historical Society – They will be hosting an outing at Huntington Creek Saturday May 15 at 4:00 p.m. Meet at the cattle corral by Buckhorn road at 4:00 p.m. sharp, then proceed to see the Huntington homesteads. Afterwards there will be a pot luck dinner and entertainment. The Historical Society will furnish the weiners, buns and condiments. Bring your favorite pot luck dish, jacket and chair. Frank Dalpaiz American Cancer Society Golf Tournament – The tournament is Saturday June 26, 2004 and will begin at 8:00 a.m. Shotgun start. There is something new this year and that is the American Cancer Society Week of Golf. June 21-26 will be considered the ACS Week of Golf and for every 18 hole round with cart that you play during this week there will be a donation.
Golf Tournament Fund Raiser – Carbon School Foundation is hosting a golf tournament to raise funds for the children of Carbon schools. The tournament is scheduled for June 12 with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. This will be a 4 man scramble format with a minimum 45 combined team handicap. There will be prizes for the winning teams, hole prizes, a raffle and lunch provided.

Vacation Bible School – The First Baptist Church of Wellington will be holding an exciting week of Vacation Bible School June 14 – 18, at 1285 East Main in Wellington. VFW Field Service Officer Visit – On May 13 a Field Service Officer from the VFW Department Service Office in Salt Lake CIty will be visiting Price to assist you in understanding and applying for rightful VA benefits, preparing and documenting application for compensation, pension, hospitalization and other benefits. This is a free service and veterans need not be members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States to qualify for assistance. The officer will be working out of the Price Workforce Services Center from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Please bring the following documents so that we may better serve you: DD form 214, marriage/divorce papers, birth/adoption/death certificates, children’s social security numbers.
