College of Eastern Utah volleyball players have spent the last two weekends on the road playing conference games against tough teams.
Coach Brent Martindale said the player’s only goal for the intensive road trip was to come away with at least one win.
After losing the first two matches to one and two ranked College of Southern Idaho and Salt Lake Community College, it looked as though the team’s goal might not be met.
However, behind the big play of 6’1′ sophomore Sandra Sorenson, the Lady Eagles were able to savor a win over North Idaho College the whole 14 hours of the drive back to Price.
Sorenson had nine kills, seven assists, two aces and eight blocks for the match.
Martindale said the number of assists Sorenson posted was extremely high for an opposite and that setters are usually the only players to have so many.
Sorenson was backed by teammates Amy Collette, who had 18 kills, 14 digs and one block, and Emily Bowles, with 11 kills, 2 aces, and six blocks.
The match took all five games to decide and was back and forth the entire way.
The final scores were 30-27, 27-30, 30-26, 28-30 and 15-10.
“We just did a real good job,” Martindale commented.
In the CSI match, Martindale said the team really struggled.
CSI is the third ranked junior college in the nation and the Lady Eagles lost in three matches, 16-30, 5-30 and 23-30.
“In our conference, it is Southern Idaho and then everyone else,” he said. “But, I felt we stacked up better against them than any other team in the conference.”
Against SLCC, CEU had the advantage through the third game, leading 2-1.
However, SLCC battled back and took games four and five to win the close match.
Martindale said he was not unhappy with the road trip and that the team was just happy to take one away.
The Lady Eagles will be on the road again this weekend, facing Colorado Northwestern Community College on Saturday.
They will then host SLCC and CSI in a chance for redemption on Oct 17 and 18.
The SLCC game begins at 7 p.m. on the 17th and the CSI game starts at 3 p.m. on the 18th at the BDAC.
