Ross Boyack
PRICE – David Ross Boyack, 93, our beloved father and grandfather, passed away from this life Feb. 27, 2003 surrounded by this family.
Born Nov. 8,1909 in Spanish Fork to David Richard and Pricilla Johnson Boyack. Married Emily Fern Jones Sept. 10, 1935 in the St. George LDS Temple. She passed away Sept. 25, 1994.
As an active member of the LDS Church, he served on the high council, as bishop of the Price 2nd LDS Ward, as president of the Price North LDS Stake, as regional welfare agent and as patriarch of the Price North LDS Stake. He served as a sealer in the Manti and Provo LDS temples.
After graduating from Spanish Fork High School, he attended the BYU Academy. He owned and operated Boyack’s Men’s Store in Price for 61 years. He also served as president of the Price Rotary Club and was a member of the board of directors of First Federal Savings and Loan.
Ross was a very kind, loving and generous man. He loved the outdoors and was an expert fly fisherman and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren at the family cabin at Ferron Reservoir.
Ross is survived by three children, Kent (Penny) Boyack of Price; Paul (Shelly) Boyack of Spanish Fork; Pam (Glenn) Conover of Brigham City; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Also survived by sister, Phyllis Jones of Phoenix, Ariz.; and brother, Bill (Norelle) Boyack of Spanish Fork. Preceded in death by two brothers, Dean and Glen.
Funeral services were Monday, March 3, at the Price North LDS Stake Center. Burial, Price Cemetery.
Jack Cotner
PRICE – Our loving father and grandfather, Dewitt Daniel “Jack” Cotner, age 76, reunited with his loving wife of 56 years on March 1, 2003, while quietly passing away at his home from a broken heart.
He was born July 12, 1926 in Waco, Neb., to Ira and Adena Sands Cotner. Married Beverly Lou Easton, Jan. 24, 1946 in San Diego, Calif. Marriage later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple. She died Dec. 30, 2002.
Member of the LDS Church. Served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Jack loved the outdoors. He enjoyed working on the trout farm in Pocatello, Idaho, and in 1969 opened the first private pheasant hunting in the Carbon-Emery area. He was a retired member of the United Mine Workers of America, Deer Creek Local 1769. Jack served on and was over the Miller Creek Water Special Service District, and also served on the Carbon County Planning and Zoning Committee and the Price River Water Improvement District Board. His greatest love was farming alongside Beverly and, in 2001, the family was awarded the Soil Conservation Award for Carbon County farmers.
Jack loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and will be dearly missed by family and a community of longtime friends.
Survived by sons, Kip D. (Glenna) Cotner, Ferron; Kevin D. (Kayleen) Cotner, Price; brother, Ora Cotner, Salem, Ore.; sisters, Hazel Butcher, San Diego, Calif.; Wilma Kohls, Fruita, Colo.; six grandchildren, Kasidy, Kandice, Kyla, Kacey, KayDee and Kale; three great-grandchildren, Danay, Kenden and Kyler. Preceded in death by parents; brother, Denzel; and sister, Goldie.
Funeral service Thursday, March 6, 11 a.m., Price 3rd LDS Ward. Family will be at Mitchell Funeral Home Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church Thursday one hour prior to service. Interment, Cliffview Cemetery, Price.
Emilio Velasquez
SUNNYSIDE – Emilio William Lackey-Velgasquez, age 19, passed away March 1, 2003.
He was born Jan. 29, 1984 in Price to Robert Velasquez and Twanna Ann Lackey.
Emilio enjoyed camping, fishing, sports and listening to his music. His pride and joy was his dog, “Queenie.” He will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Survived by father, Robert Velasquez, Grand Junction, Colo.; brothers, Tyler and Brenden Polito, Sunnyside; brother, Kendall Smith, Creed, Colo.; sister, Cheylee Velasquez, East Carbon; grandparents, Emmett (Bonnie) Rodriguez, Sunnyside; William (Olga) Velasquez, Grand Junction, Colo.; special uncle, Douglas Lackey, Sunnyside; and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. Preceded in death by mother.
Funeral service Wednesday, March 5, 11 a.m., East Carbon LDS Ward. Family will be at Mitchells Funeral Home Tuesday, 7 to 8 p.m. and at the church Wednesday one hour prior to service. Interment, Valley View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Carbon Credit Union.
David Ellis
ST. GEORGE/WELLINGTON – David Merrill Ellis, age 87, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, in St. George.
He was born June 1, 1915 in Storrs to David Henry Ellis and Dora Petersen Ellis. He married Fern Marshall June 8, 1937 in the Manti LDS Temple.
He was raised in Wellington and attended Carbon County High School in Price, where he was active in drama, band and journalism. He graduated with honors. He was awarded a bachelor’s degree in education from Central Washington State College and was working on his master’s in history when World War II interrupted his education. He taught in a two-room schoolhouse in Peoh Point, Wash., then worked for Boeing in Seattle, Wash., during the war. He later began his life career as a life insurance salesman, where he formed many enduring friendships.
He served faithfully in many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, among them, as the first bishop of the newly formed University of Washington College Ward in Seattle. He was a loved and revered bishop, and he maintained close contact with many former students throughout his life.
Merrill loved the outdoors and had a passion for salmon fishing and riding his Paso Fino horses. He was an avid reader all of his life.
Merrill and Fern raised three daughters in the Seattle area. They moved to St. George upon his retirement. Merrill made friends wherever he went and they were always a very important part of his life.
Surviving family include his daughters, Sally (John) Husford, St. George; Kathy (Jim) Rhynard, Kirkland, Wash.; Susan (Wayne) Ivison, Riverton; 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Evelyn (Don) Conrad, Moses Lake, Wash.; and brother, Dr. Raymond Ellis, Tacoma, Wash. Merrill was preceded in death by son, Douglas Merrill Ellis; wife, Fern Ellis; parents, David and Dora Ellis; and sisters, Helen Bunnell and Jessie Smith.
