The Carbon High track team traveled to Richfield last Wednesday to compete against Richfield and Delta High Schools.
The middle distance runners had a great day as Isaac Goodrich and Scott Terry ran together for the first seven laps in the two mile run.
Goodrich pulled away in the last 400 meters to finish with a time of 10:13.This was an excellent time this early in the season.
Goodrich also placed first in the 1600 meter run and third in the 800 meters with a personal best time in both races.
Terry led in the 800 meters from the beginning of the race to finish first with a time of 2:06.48.
David Goodrich placed second in the 1600 meter race followed by Tyler Munns.
In the hurdles, Bryan Stewart placed second in the 110 meter high hurdle event. Stewart also finished in first place in the 300 meter low hurdles.
According to assistant coach, Stewart Foster, Stewart looked good in the 300 hurdles by barely edging out a runner for first place.
Joe Palmer also looked impressive as he placed second in the 400 meters and third in the 200 meter run.
In the throwing events, Lee Prettyman placed second in the javelin missing first place by six inches.
Prettyman also placed fourth in the discus and shot put.
Justin Blackham had a good throw to place third in the javelin. Perry Laulu and Tyson O’Neil placed second and third respectfully in the shot put only two inches out of first place.
In the discus, Mike Terry placed second followed by O’Neil.
“Our throwers looked good at the first meet of the season,” explained the assistant coach.
In the girls events, Melanie Madsen placed second in the 3200 meters and first in the 1600 meters.
Ashley Rowley placed fourth in the 1600 meters while Jana Burrows came in second place in the 800 meter run.
In the high jump, Carbon swept the event. Maquette Potts finished in first place, Brittany Banning placed second, Jessica Serfustini finished in third place, fourth place went to Andraya Newby and Cora Broadbear finished in fifth place.
In the girls hurdle events, Allie and Amie Stewart looked good for their first time in the 300 meter low hurdles. Both athletes are ninth grade students from Helper Junior High and should be pushed by Broadbear this season.
“A lot of the athletes show promise and will be getting better as the season goes along,” concluded Foster.
The next meet for the Dinos will be Wednesday in Delta. The team will then return home to host an invitational track meet Friday and Saturday.
The event will begin at 3 p.m., Friday afternoon and at 9 a.m., Saturday morning. There is no charge for spectators and the public is encouraged to attend the state qualifying event.
