The Carbon High girls softball team competed in their first two games of the year this past week. The first of which took place last Friday as the Dinos hosted Park City.
The Dinos came out strong and played well. The varsity team had nine runs in the fourth inning to take control of the ball game.
Park City rallied by scoring six points in two innings, but this was not enough to edge the Dinos who completed the game with the 9-6 victory.
Carbon coach, Tony Pinedo explained that Cassie Terrell threw a good game and really settled into the swing of things after the first innings.
Pinedo was also quick to point out that the victory was made possible by an entire team effort.
“The team really came out and played well. They played strong defense and even though they broke down a few times, they regained control of the ball game and pulled off the win,” Pinedo explained.
The junior varsity also competed last Friday against Park City. The JV team also played well and walked away with the 15-1 victory.
“This year, we have a sophomore team, JV team and the varsity team. This will allow these girls to grow and prepare in stages for varsity competition,” Pinedo explained earlier this year.
The Dino team moved on to compete in Moab against Grand High School last Monday. Although the Carbon team did not return home with a victory, the squad did gain valuable experience.
In eight innings, the Dinos lost to Grand, 2-1. Although the Carbon team played well, they failed to make bunts when necessary.
“They really played well and played better defense. The thing that hurt us was the fact that our bunting efforts were down. In key situations, we didn’t make the big bunt play. Our hitting was also down, but overall, the team played well. After all, It is still early in the year,” stated Pinedo.
The Dino teams will host four games this Thursday as Spanish Fork comes to town to take on the varsity and junior varsity teams.
Also in town Thursday will be Union who will play against the Dinos junior varsity and sophomore teams.
The games will take place starting at 3 p.m. at the ball parks near the fairgrounds.
With the season rapidly approaching, the Dinos prepare for Region 8 competition by playing in as many games as possible. This early in the year, anything can happen.
