Viking season underway

East Carbon began their opening week of the season with a slew of games.
After an 83-30 loss on the road to Whitehorse on Dec.1, the Vikings looked to turn it around against Uintah River.
But after leading for most of the first half, Uintah River overtook the Vikings’ 19-17 lead in the third quarter and went on to a 48-33 win.
“The second half we just couldn’t find the basket,” coach Jeff Cisneros said. “We struggled from the field and shot three for eight from the foul line.”
Kyle Leonard was the high scorer for the Vikings with 11 points. Kevin Cline accumulated eight for the night.
The next night East Carbon hosted Carbon High’s sophomore team.
Leonard lit up the floor with 17 points, while Cline added nine and Andy Farlaino posted five.
East Carbon looked to have the game clinched but a Carbon surge in the fourth quarter vanquished the Vikings’ lead and Carbon won 46-35.
The Vikings finished the exhausting week with a tournament hosted by Salt Lake Lutheran on Dec. 5 and 6.
Salt Lake Lutheran trampled the Vikings in their opening game, winning 71-30.
According to Cisneros, the team was overmatched and turnovers really hurt their momentum.
East Carbon ended the week on a positive note, however, taking Uintah River into a triple overtime battle.
The Vikings lost three key players to fouls in the third overtime and Uintah River coasted to a 63-56 win.
Leonard had 27 points, including seven three-pointers. Farlaino contributed 11 and Cline added seven.
Leonard was named to the all-tournament team for his performance.
The team will enjoy a break this week before resuming play on Dec. 13 against Escalante at home.
