The regular season kicked off for the Carbon High Dinos last week and the outcome was quite disappointing for the Dino squad.
The Carbon team kicked off the Region 8 season last Wednesday night as they traveled to Castle Dale to take on the region’s top team, the Emery Spartans.
After finding themselves in foul trouble early on in the game, the Dinos struggled to capture the upper hand throughout the entire competition. By the half, Carbon trailed the Spartans 34-21.
The second half of the game, the Dinos stepped up slightly as they posted 18 points in the third quarter and 19 in the fourth. The scoring rally occured a little too late for the Dinos who were handed their first season loss, 77-58.
Throughout the preseason, the Dinos were able to boost several of its players into double figures each game. Against the Spartans, only two athletes accomplished this as Bryan Stewart scored 20 points and Neal Maynes finished with 15.
“The Spartans are a strong team. It hurt us to get into foul trouble early on and it seemed to plague us throughout the competition. When we only have a few kids in double figures, it is also a downfall. We just need to move the ball better and sink our shots,” explained Dino coach Ted Bianco.
Following the loss to Emery, the Dinos stepped up to host the North Sanpete Hawks, the first home game which Carbon has hosted during the regular season.
The stands were packed with Dino fans as the Carbon team battled the Hawks.
Unfortunately, the Dinos jumped out a bit sluggish. The team failed to move the ball well and this cost the team the Region 8 victory as they fell to the Hawks, 72-54.
“It’s hard to pinpoint what exactly went wrong. I do know that we need to move the ball around a lot more and a lot better. Our shooting also has to improve. When we have only one player in double figures, our record suffers,” commented Bianco.
Maynes was the only Dino to post double figures against the Hawks as he finished the game with 20 points.
Following in scoring was Joe Moynier with nine points and Stewart with eight.
The Dinos look to rebound from the rocky season start this week as the team travels to Lehi to take on the Pioneers.
Currently, Lehi is ranked second in the region with a 1-0 record. The Dinos hope to drop Lehi in the records as they look for their first victory of the season.
