The Carbon County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) program began in 1972 for the purpose of engaging people 55 years and older in volunteer service throughout the community. Today, over 30 years later the group continues with 200 volunteers and put in over 27,000 hours of service every year. The group is kicking off their spring activities April 26 with the annual volunteer recognition program. This is scheduled at the senior center and invitations are being distributed at this time.
Rebecca Mason serves as the group’s executive director and is joined by Tera Prudence, who manages the Volunteer in Service to America (VISTA) and acts as the resource developer. Her responsibilities are to recruit new volunteers, enhance the existing services and develop new ideas that help better meet the needs of the volunteers and community.
Tressa McArthur joined RSVP through the Experience Works program and assists in coordinating the activities in East Carbon, as well as helping at he senior center. She was hired in February as the new program coordinator and spends time recruiting volunteers, keeping track of volunteer time sheets, and overseeing the cell phones for seniors program throughout the county.
Shirley Shellenbarger is the newest member of the RSVP team and comes to the group through the SCSEP Program. As office manager she is in charge of keeping the office open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily and taking care of the phones and paper work.
A big project Shellenbarger is coordinating the swap meet that is set for Saturday, May 17 beginning at 8 a.m. It will be held in the senior center parking lot at 100 South and Carbon Avenue and sponsored by the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.
