Every year during the Helper Arts Festival, Carbon Country Recreation hosts a 5K run.
Sixteen participants entered Saturday’s race, which began in Spring Canyon and ended at the parkway in Helper.
“The race gives an athletic element to a cultural event,” Frank Ori said. Ori is the assistant director of Carbon County Recreation activities.
Among the competitors was former Carbon High cross-country runner Isaac Goodrich, who graduated in the spring.
Graduation has not hindered Goodrich’s ability to compete, however.
Goodrich won the race, finishing in 17 minutes and 21 seconds. His time was almost two minutes better than the next closest runner, his brother Paul Goodrich.
In addition to the 5K, Goodrich also ran the Provo River half marathon on Aug. 9. He competed with nearly 2,000 other runners in the 13.1 mile race.
His finishing time of one hour, 16 minutes and 44 seconds was enough to get him first place in the 18 and under catagory.
He finished 10th overall.
“The last miles were very hard. I ran with a rock in my shoe, which gave me a huge blister,” Goodrich said. “But I knew I would make it.”
Goodrich is considering running for several colleges. Weber State, Southern Utah University, and Brigham Young University Hawaii are a few of the schools that have made offers.
However, Goodrich said the running will have to be put on hold for a couple years; he is currently preparing for an LDS mission.
Two of Goodrich’s brothers will be carrying the family flame for Carbon High. David, a junior, and Paul, a freshman are running for Carbon this year.
Isaac Goodrich said he has high expectations for his brothers.
“Paul’s freshman times are already better than my sophomore runs,” Goodrich said.
Paul finished the 5K race in second place, at 19 minutes and 10 seconds.
Other top finishers included Mika Salas and Danielle Pendergrass in the 19-29 female catagory. Salas and Pendergrass finished together with a time of 23 minutes and 33 seconds.
In the 30 and over category, Dale Woodbury finished in 19 minutes and 27 seconds and Brian Peterson in 23 minutes and 48 seconds. Shawn Grant, the only runner in the 19-29 category, had a finishing time of 22 minutes and 28 seconds.
