Tony McFarland, a star for three years in baseball and basketball at East Carbon High School has been offered and has accepted a scholarship to play baseball with Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa starting this fall.
McFarland, who was all state in the 1A classification in both sports for all three years he played at East Carbon was looked at by a number of schools, but the Briar Cliff coaches impressed him and the offer they made was the best according to his father Todd McFarland.
Briar Cliff University is not well known in Utah but in the midwest it is a highly regarded school both athletically and academically.
The four year school competes in the Great Plains Athletic Conference against similar sized private schools from Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota.
The Chargers coach is Boyd Pitkin and he led the team to a Region III NAIA tournament berth last year.
Sioux City is located on the banks of the Missouri River in northwest Iowa.
McFarland was a stalwart on an East Carbon team that went to the 1A state tournament all three years he played. He also played American Legion Baseball for the Helper team the last three years, pitching consistently for the team this summer. He finished the season with 13 strikeouts during Helper’s last state game against highly rated Taylorsville.
Recently, McFarland competed in the Hawaiian best of the best tournament where his team finished in first place.
McFarland’s scholarship is for a full four years to the midwestern school.
