The College of Eastern Utah men’s basketball team competed in two games this past weekend. The series kicked off Friday as the team traveled to western Colorado to compete against the Colorado Northwestern Community College Spartans.
Both teams played intense throughout the game. The Eagles struggled however from the field in the first half shooting only 38 percent. Despite this fact, the Eagles maintained the lead entering the half by the score, 33-32.
As the second half started, it was anybody’s ball game. The Eagles knew it was important to sink their shots and to play strong defense in order to walk away with the Scenic West Athletic Conference victory.
Although the Eagles only shot 42 percent from the field in the second half, this was enough to capture the 94-89 win over the Spartans.
Leading the eastern Utah team in points was Anthony Grant who completed the game with 23 points. Grant also pulled down six rebounds and posted three steals during the road game.
Also playing strong for the Eagles was Derrick Turner who finished the game with 20 points as well as 15 rebounds. Turner is currently in the middle of his first season with CEU and has found his niche with the team by becoming a dominant player for the squad.
Rounding out the double figure scoring for the Eagles were Corey Brown with 18, Patrick Stinnett with 12 and Chris Langhorne with 11 points.
After capturing the win over the Spartans, the Eagles returned home the following night to host the Utah Valley State College Wolverines.
Once again, the Eagles struggled from the field by shooting only 30 percent from the field in the first half. The only consolation for the Eagles was the fact that the Wolverines also only shot 30 percent from the field in the first half.
Entering the locker room at the half, the Eagles found themselved down by only four points, 25-21. At this point, it was still anybody’s game.
Both teams entered the second half by kicking up steam. The action was intense as both teams struggled to gain control of the scoreboard.
By the time the smoke had cleared, the Wolverines had defeated the Eagles, 67-60. The loss now drops the Eagles to 6-8 for the season against SWAC teams.
Grant once again lead the Eagles in scoring as he completed the game with 21 points.
Following was Stinnett who scored 11 points against the Wolverines.
With only two game remaining in the regular season, the Eagles look to complete the year on a winning note.
Thursday, the Eagles will host Southern Idaho with tip off scheduled for 8 p.m.
The Eagles will then complete the season at home against Salt Lake Community College Saturday evening at the BDAC.
The Eagles know that it is important to finish the season off as strong as possible. With the remaining games taking place at home, the Eagles could easily capture two straight victories.
