Leila Black
HUNTINGTON – Leila V. Bunderson Black, age 88, passed away Feb. 24, 2003 in Ferron.
She was born May 30, 1914 in Emery to Roy and Hessie Lee Bunderson. She married LaVar M. Black June 8, 1938 in the Logan LDS Temple.
She attended Snow College and Brigham Young Academy. She taught school in Carbon and Emery County for about 20 years, after which she and her husband served a mission for the Texas South Mission and worked in the Manti LDS Temple.
As an active member of the LDS Church she served in numerous callings and was especially fond of genealogy work. She also helped raise many foster children.
Leila is survived by son, Daniel LaVar (Dorothy) Black of Huntington; seven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Also survived by brother, Mack Bunderson; and sisters, Alice Truman and Grace Jensen. She was preceded in death by husband; and daughter, DeAnn Jensen.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Feb. 27, 1 p.m., at the Huntington LDS Stake Center, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the Huntington Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.

Darrell Norton
PRICE – Darrell Norton passed away Feb. 23, 2003 at his home surrounded by his family.
Darrell was born Dec. 17, 1910 in Woodville, Idaho, to Lafeyette Miles and Sarah Elviria (Vida) Mathews Norton. He was the second of eight children. Darrell married Roma Helen Singleton Oct. 29, 1939; their marriage was later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple.
As a member of the LDS Church, Darrell held many positions, including high priest group leadership.
Darrell loved horses, running cattle and cowboying, dancing and his many friends at the senior citizen centers in Overton, Nev., and Price. With his passing, we lose one of the last cowboys of the cowboy era in Carbon County.
His family homesteaded in Clark’s Valley (Kiz). As a teenager, he worked for Preston Nutter at the Nutter Ranch in Nine Mile Canyon and he also worked for several large outfits in the area. For some time, he broke horses for a living. Eventually, he went into the mines and retired from Horse Canyon mine with the UMWA.
Darrell was one of the original members of the Wellington Mountaineers Horse Riding Club and judged many state approved horse shows and rodeo queen contests. For several years, he served on the Wellington City Council.
He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and as a loyal friend and a loving father and grandfather.
He is survived by children, Marvin (Jeanette) Evans, Wellington; Arlette and Asay Pierce, Wellington; Allie Dee Pierce, Price; Doyle (Molly) Norton, Centerville; Wade Norton, Castle Dale; 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers, Ross Norton, Bruce Norton; and sister, Donna Jensen. Preceded in death by wife, Roma; one sister and three brothers.
Funeral service will be Thursday, Feb. 27, 11 a.m., at the Price North LDS Stake Center, 449 North 100 East, Price. Viewing will be Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fausett’s Mortuary and also at the stake center one hour preceding the services. Burial, Wellington Cemetery.
Ona Tochi
PRICE – Ona Mae Fletcher Tochi, age 78, passed away Feb. 24, 2003.
She was born Sept. 11, 1924 in Spring Canyon to George and Bessie Boren Fletcher. Married Jim Watson, later divorced. Married John Tochi June 24, 1972 in Price.
Ona worked a number of years for Atomic Energy in Los Angeles, Calif., prior to moving back to Utah in 1970. She also worked for Carbon Hospital and, later, at Southeastern Utah Association of Local Governments.
Served as Lady of Elks president in 1993 and 1994. She loved to travel and enjoyed being a hostess for family functions. She will be greatly missed by all.
Survived by husband, John Tochi; brother, George (Mary) Fletcher; stepdaughters, Linda (Byron) Allred; Charlotte (Rick) Davis; Becky (Gary) Kloepfer; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents; stepfather, Joe Bonto; son, Bob Watson; and grandson, Jake Watson.
Funeral service Friday, Feb. 28, 1 p.m., Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s Thursday evening, 7 to 9 p.m., and Friday one hour prior to services. Interment, Price City Cemetery.

Carolyn Mabrito
Oh, Sugar!
HELPER/SALT LAKE CITY – Carolyn Corsetti Mabrito, 86, passed away Feb. 21, 2003.
Born Aug. 8, 1916 in Dawson, N.M., to Antonio and Nicolena Corsetti. Married John (DiVietti) Mabrito Aug. 8, 1933. Together ,they established Star Music Company.
“Carey” was an avid golfer, a fun bowler, a bridge player and a dedicated Pink Lady volunteer at Castleview Hospital. She was a devout Catholic and had a special devotion to St. Anthony and the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
She is survived by son, John Brent Mabrito, Helper; daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Glenn Stastny, Salt Lake City; three grandsons, John Stastny, Mesquite, Nev.; James Stastny, San Bernardino, Calif.; and Ensign Joseph Stastny, U.S. Naval Base, Yokosuka, Japan. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Virginia Saccomanno, Grand Junction, Colo.; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Corsetti, Camarillo, Calif. Preceded in death by husband, John; sister, Anna Rose Pessetto; and brother, Sammy Corsetti.

A visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 27, 6 to 7 p.m., at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. Josephine Slopanskey
HELPER/NEW MEXICO – Josephine Slopanskey, age 94, passed away Feb. 20, 2003 in Albuquerque, N.M.
She was born June 26, 1908 in Cuba, N.M., to Thomas and Estefanita Rodriguez Garcia. Married Edward “Doc” Slopan-skey, he died Oct. 2, 1986.
Former longtime resident of Helper.
Survived by brother, Felix (Dorothy) Garcia, Albuquerque, N.M.; nieces, Gloria (Jeff) Cook, Georgia (Terry) Dye; nephew, Ruben (Eva) Moreno.
Funeral Mass Tuesday, Feb. 25, 10 a.m., St. Anthony Catholic Church. Family will be at Mitch-ell’s Tuesday one hour prior to services. Committal service, Mountain View Cemetery, Helper.
