Marilyn Guymon holds onto Bar C Bar Bright Pistol and Bright Scarlet, two horse she has been training since the two and one year old were ponys. At the world competition for the In Hand Trail Class at Spanish Fork last week, Bright Scarlet won the world title and Bright Pistol took second. Beautiful as these animals are, that is only a small part of the competition. These horses are trained to maneuver through an obstacle course that is constantly changing. In fact in this competition, meet officials narrowed the cones in one part of the course and told the trainers to trot the horses through them. The courses have logs to go over and maneuver around as well as a number of other difficult barriers the horses must meet and beat. In addition, the breed is judged on it’s size (which is smaller than a normal horse but bigger than the miniatures), color, and confirmation (how the horse is put together). This breed was started in the United States in the 1950’s and has grown in numbers substantially over the years. In the Utah County meet there were over 2000 entries, from across the country.
