| During the only home cross country meet of the season, the Dino runners proved to the hometown crowd just how talented they are. Carbon finished in first place in both the boys and girls team competition while Isaac Goodrich crossed the finish line first in the boys event. |
The Carbon High Dinos cross country team hosted their annual meet Oct. 2. The course was rough and athletes from the visiting teams expressed their admiration for the challenging course.
The meet attracted eight separate teams to compete and Carbon took first place team honors in both the boys and girls events. This accomplishment even captured the Dino coaches by surprise. In fact, the coaches felt that the boys would finish in second place behind Lehi who was favored to win the event and the girls were expected to finish in second place behind North Sanpete.
In the boys division, Isaac Goodrich pulled away from teammate Scott Terry and Ryan Frazier of Lehi to win the race with a time of 16 minutes, 27 seconds.
Terry finished the race in third place and was followed by Joe Palmer who crossed the finish line in seventh place and David Goodrich placed eighth. Chris Cook was Carbon’s fifth man as he finished the race in 23rd place.
There were 64 competitors in the boys race which started on the practice field behind the school. The course then traveled down the hill by the track and then lead to the canal. Next, the course took off around the canal and down Cedar Hills Drive. From here, the course went up in the hills east of the road, then the athletes repeated the route back to the Dino track where each athlete completed one lap to finish the race.
Carbon finished the race with a total of 43 points and was followed by Lehi with 55 points. North Sanpete and Emery followed while Duchesne, Wasatch, Altamont and Green River rounded out the standings.
In the girls race, Dino lead runner Melanie Madsen and Amber Bockweg of North Sanpete fought it out for the entire race. Madsen let Bockweg get ahead by quite a ways after the two mile point, but she closed in on Bockweg the final 400 meters of the race. It was not quite good enough however as Madsen finished in second place, missing first place by only six seconds.
Ashley Rowley and Janell Bates ran an excellent race by placing sixth and seventh overall.
Brittany Horrocks is discovering she can keep up with the rest of the crowd as she finished in 12th place and Elizabeth Brooks crossed the finish line in 14th place. Jana Burrows and Ashley Anderson finished in 24th and 25th place respectfully.
The Carbon girls finished in first place with 41 points and was followed by North Sanpete with 46 points. Duchesne, Altamont, Lehi and Emery rounded out the team standings.
Following the home meet, three of the Carbon boys traveled to Orem to participate in the Kiwanis Invitational meet. They all turned in good performances with Isaac Goodrich placing third, and Joe Palmer finished in 11th place.
Junior varsity runner David Goodrich placed first in the Orem meet.
The Dinos will compete Oct. 9 in Delta where the team will battle for valuable points to lead the runner to the region tourney later in the month.
