The Carbon Dinos continued preseason competition this past weekend as they played in the Ben Lomand Tournament.
First on the Dinos opponent list was West High. The Friday game proved to be exciting as the two teams battled for control of the scoreboard.
By the time that the final buzzer sounded, Carbon found themselves down, 75-73, the second loss for the Dinos during the preseason.
Despite losing the ball game, the Dinos played well with three athletes scoring double figures. Leading the team in scoring was Neal Maynes who posted 24 points against West.
Also in double figures was Joe Moynier and Brandon Manzanares who each have been dominant shooters for the Dinos this year.
“The team came out and they played hard. To have three players score in double figures is quite an accomplishment on the part of the team. These figures would not have been possible without the help of the other team members. Tyson Hackwell did a great job handing out the assists to the players who scored the baskets. It was a great team effort,” explained head coach Ted Bianco.
The only obstacle which seems to be in the Dinos way is the free throw shooting average. Against West High, the Dinos shot only 15-30 from the line. This is not the first time during the preseason that the Dinos have struggled to sink free throws.
In a game played late last month, the Dinos shot only 5-14 against Uintah which eventually lead to the Dinos defeat, much like this weekends loss to West.
“We need to work on free throw shooting. This is our biggest weakness. The team is very talented and can go head-to-head with just about anybody, but they struggle at the line. This is something that has to improve,” explained Bianco.
The second game of the tourney for the Dinos was against Region 4 team, Roy. The Dinos felt pressured during most of the competition as the Royals created several problems for Carbon to overcome.
“Roy is a very talented team and the pressed us during most of the game. Although we did play well, we were not able to overcome the pressure out on the court,” stated Bianco.
The Dinos fell to the Royals 54-71, but once again, Carbon held on and played strong throughout the entire ball game.
Three of Carbon’s players completed the game with double figures. Also adding to the Dinos effort was Randon Timothy who according to Bianco really stepped up and played well.
The Dinos will look to get back on track Wednesday evening as they host Wasatch at 7 p.m. at Carbon High.
This is a talented team who has just minor adjustments to make in order to get back on a winning track.
