The Carbon Dinos boys basketball team ended the week with two preseason games. The Dinos split the games and look forward to kicking off the new year in strong fashion.
Carbon’s first opponent was the Union Cougars, a road game which resulted in a long bus ride home for the Dinos.
The team has been plagued throughout the season with shooting problems. At times it seems that the Dinos can’t miss a shot, yet at other times they have a difficult time even sinking free throws. The Union game proved to be one of those times when the Dinos couldn’t make things happen the way they wanted.
Despite the Cougars turning the ball over 10 times in the first quarter, the Dinos failed to capitalize on the mistakes and found themselves trailing Union 22-17 by the end of the period.
Although the team only trailed by five entering the second quarter, the Dinos found themselves behind at the half by the score of 44-39.
The second half of play found Carbon picking up the pace a bit as they outscored the Cougars, 22-19 in the fourth. This rally was not enough however as the team lost the game 86-70.
For the past several games, the Dinos have had three or more players score in double figures. In the Union game however, only two athletes posted double figures.
Joe Moynier set the pace in scoring with 26 points while Neal Maynes had 10.
With disappointment lingering in the minds of the Dino players, the team stepped up to take on the Granger Lancers at home on Friday night. The match up was quite intense as both teams played strong which led to a nail biting outcome.
The Lancers entered the game with a 0-8 record which meant that the team was determined to rack up their first victory of the year against the 3A opponent. The Dinos on the other hand had other plans for the visiting Granger squad.
As the competition began to heat up, so did tempers as Granger’s head coach exchanged words with one of the officials and was booted out of the game.
This fired up the Dinos who capitalized on the Lancers misfortune and came back from a 29-19 half time deficit to even the score at the end ofthe game, forcing an overtime duel for the win.
Overtime was played just as the quarters before had ben, with extreme intensity. Both teams held on up to the final buzzer as the Dinos ourscored the Lancers by only three points, leading to Carbon’s 73-70 over their 5A opponent.
Moynier once again lead the Dinos in scoring with 25 points. He was followed by Brandon Manzanares who posted 17 and Tyson Hackwell who scored 14.
The Dinos will return to action Dec. 28 as they travel to Park City in their final game of the calendaryear. They will then return after the Christmas break and play two back to back home games Jan. 3-4.
